The Social Side of Ireland and Irish People in Continental Europe

June 11th, 2008

As the Irish take a media break from The Lisbon Treaty, it is a great time look at the other side of Irish life in Europe.

The influence of Irish Culture, Irish Music & Dancing, and Irish Sport on the rest of Europe has been quite phenomenal”, reports Siasy Collins, Editor of EuropeanIrish.com.

Here are some eye-opening facts:

  • Emigration from Ireland is now at its highest level since 1989.
  • More Irish people now emigrate to Continental Europe (39%),
  • than to the UK (24%) and America (7%) combined.
  • 1/4 Million Irish people now live in Continental Europe.
  • Almost 60% of all foreign trips by Irish people last year, were to Continental Europe.*

*According to CSO, (Central Statistics Office),”The number of Overseas Visits by Irish Residents on Continental European routes totalled 4,583,000 in 2007, an increase of 19% on 2006.” That is more than 12,500 trips to Europe every single day, 88,000 trips to Europe each week.

The Irish people in Europe over the past 30 years have settled and introduced Irish Music, Irish Dancing, Irish Sport, Irish Literature, Irish Culture and Irish Character to many of our European neighbours.
Irish people living in Europe are now central to many Cultural societies in Europe, as well as keeping alive the ties with Ireland.

Expat Mary Norah Ryan has recently been elected President of the Greek Irish Society in Athens, Galway emigrant Mary Gavin has been central to the Irish Club in The Hague Netherlands for many years. These are just 2 of 100’s of great Irish people based abroad in Europe, voluntarily and selflessly helping Irish society and communities based locally there, as well as newly arriving.

There are 500 Irish & Celtic Music Festivals across Europe.

There is a fulcrum of Irish Music in Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic, with more than 650 Irish Music Bands now based in Europe.

Brittany on the West Coast of Europe hosts the Brittany Gaelic Football Championship, with 6 teams, and no Irish player on 5 of those teams. In fact Gaelic Football is now played in 30 clubs across 14 European nations (as well as in Ireland and UK).
The Nordic Irish Dancing Feis attracts 200 Irish dancers young and adult, from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Russia, Germany and Belgium.

In January it was reported that the Irish population in Spain is in the region of 78,000, roughly the same as Galway city, and 20,000 more than Waterford city.

With Irish people at the heart of their communities in Europe, supporting 10,000’s of Irish people arriving over the past decade and more, it is no surprise to find today more than 2,500 Irish Pubs on the Continent, a social venue for Irish to meet, and relate to home.
Finding where to watch the All-Ireland, the Irish Rugby & Soccer Internationals is always a favourite, as well as finding a venue where other Irish people go.

Irish people living in Europe, Irish residents traveling to Europe, and non-Irish Europeans interested in Irish Culture, no longer have to search 100’s of different resources to find

  • Irish News in Europe,
  • Irish Events in Europe,
  • Irish Sport,
  • Irish Entertainment,
  • Irish Pubs,
  • Irish Bands,
  • Irish Festivals
  • Irish Dancing,
  • Irish Societies,
  • and Irish Embassies in mainland Europe.

EuropeanIrish.com connects all of these resources together, and connects these 3 Irish groups with these Irish resources and with each other.

Today, while the calm is there before the storm, come and discover the Social Side of the European Irish world on www.EuropeanIrish.com , supporting the social & community side of the Irish in Europe, for the past 12 years.

How many Irish people living in your country?

May 29th, 2008

EuropeanIrish.com is currently engaged in an estimate of the amount of Irish people living in Continental Europe - compiling the Irish population counts (estimates) for each country in Europe.

Can you help? Do you Live in a European country -?

email admin@europeanirish.com

Have you an estimate of the amount of irish people living there?

We began our research by asking our Irish Embassies across Europe.

Many have been really helpful, and have provided a good estimate and information on the numbers that they know and ideas of other irish groups numbers  for which they don’t know.

We thank you - Irish embassies in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia & Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel, Poland, Italy

The numbers provided usually include registered residents - on the census,
whereas they also indicated that there are also Irish Students on Erasmus / Socrates Programmes, or studying nearby on other programmes.
Irish people not registered - living locally
Irish people who travel Europe and based in different cities for a few months at a time.
Backpackers, who are in Continental Europe but not based in any 1 country.
Irish Defence force commitments

However - quite a few irish embassies have been less than helpful, replying with lines similar to the following :

“The Embassy of Ireland does not keep an official record of the number
of Irish citizens resident in <country>. We do not engage in any
speculative estimation process regarding same. While Irish residents
can voluntarily register with the Embassy, they do so in confidence for
cultural, consular or other reasons. We are not at liberty to share
this information with third parties.”

We received an email to ths effect from the Irish embassy in Lithuania, Austria, Spain (& Andorra), Slovakia, Turkey, Czech Republic.

We are continuing our research with Irish Societies and clubs, and have received great help from Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland and France.
But still have along way to go.

So if you can find or estimate the amount of Irish people living in your country - add it as a comment here, please,

thanks

EuropeanIrish.com wins Market Entry Success Award, Presented by Trade Minister Micheál Martin

April 18th, 2008

EuropeanIrish.com wins Market Entry Success Award, Presented by Trade Minister Micheál Martin
Press Release Co. Cork, Ireland — 17 Apr. 2008 —

EuropeanIrish.com has been announced as the winner of the Genesis Enterprise Program “Market Entry Success” Award for 2008.
Siasy Collins (full-name Proinsias), Editor, Publisher and Managing Director of EuropeanIrish.com has been reporting on the Irish scene in Europe for the past 5 years, and on the GAA in mainland Europe for he past 12 years. EuropeanIrish.com connects Irish people living in and heading to Continental Europe, with Irish Services, resources and activities available locally, including local Irish entertainment and sport.

Siasy Collins was thrilled with the award, “as it acknowledges the progress taken by Europeanirish.com over the past 12 months and the 4 years before that. Last year Emigration from Ireland was at its highest level in 16 years. More Irish people now head to Continental Europe, than to the UK and America, combined. So it is vital to have an active online resource which connects together all the Irish resources and activities on the Continent, as a support for Irish people living in and heading there”

On Monday evening, Irish Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin presenting the awards along with the event sponsors, AIB and Ernst & Young, at the Genesis Enterprise Programme (GEP) Showcase & Awards, at Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), remarked that GEP is “a prime example of the successful synthesis of the resources of the Development Agencies and Educational Institutions in stimulating entrepreneurship and innovation.”

EuropeanIrish.com has been one of 18 start up businesses participating on the Genesis Enterprise Programme (www.gep.ie) for the past 12 months, which is an incubation programme for entrepreneurs to speed phases of development of the business.
Each year the participating businesses are presented to the public in a showcase exhibition with the achievements of particular businesses in reaching commercial milestones being recognised in an Awards ceremony. Composed of seasoned professionals and experienced entrepreneurs, the Adjudication Panel for the Awards was Michael Hayes, AIB; Michael Cotter, Ernst & Young; Colin Walsh, Thomas Crosbie Holdings; Charles Garvey, Nitrosell; and Jerry Kennelly.

Colin Walsh, group marketing manager with Thomas Crosbie Holdings, who are the award media sponsors said “Entrepreneurship can be a lonely calling. There are many long hours of trying to get people to believe in you, and your vision so when an opportunity comes along to recognise the achievements of these entrepreneurs it must be taken. I hope we will be recognising the achievements of this year’s participants for many years to come.”

EuropeanIrish.com was recently appointed the Official Media Partner of the European GAA County Board, which represents 30 clubs in 14 countries. It has also recently re-launched its website, with already 550 new members joined in the past few weeks. It has had 1 million visitors in the past 12 months, visiting more than 7 million webpages, and this week, celebrates its 5th birthday.
