Golf: Harrington and McDowell in the top 6 in Hong Kong and Japan

Monday, November 19th, 2007

In Hong Kong Open, Graeme McDowell scored 4 sub-69 rounds, carding 67, 66, 68, 68.
When 4 rounds of consistent form are not good-enough, then it must be difficult to stomach, admitting “I am a little bit frustrated but it is a great way to finish the year ”
He hads given himself something to play for next year - as he is closing in on a European Ryder Cup spot.

Graeme has had 10 top-20 finishes this year.

Graeme in fact ended behind 5 others, and 4 shots off the leader.

Miguel Angel Jiminez with 65, 67, 66, 67 took the title .

01 Jimenez -16

06 McDowell -11

= 20th McGrane -7

= 26th Murphy -6

= 50th McGinley +1

##

In Japan, Padraig Harrington had a tie for the lead with 2 days of play left. His third round was his downfall, declaring “‘I ran out of a little bit of steam, got a little bit frustrated yesterday, (Saturday).”  he hit a 73 in his 3rd round which left him 6 strokes off the pace.

Harrington was never a factor in the final round at Phoenix Country Club, after starting the day six shots off the pace, but he shot a respectable 69 in tough, windy conditions to tie for fifth, six strokes behind winner Ian Poulter.

Golf : Irish Women V Norway

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Report from Friday’s Independent.ie

IRELAND yesterday brushed aside the disappointment of failing to qualify for the top flight in the European Ladies Team Championship in Milan and positively set about the task of finishing in the best possible position in the Euro rankings - ninth.

Ireland got off to the best start against an under-rated Norwegian team, winning the foursomes match courtesy of Deirdre Smith and Maura Morrin who were never troubled by Amalie Valle and Lene Morch and romped to a 6&4 success in double-quick time.

Playing at the top of the singles order Irish champion Karen Delaney continued her woeful run by crashing 4&3 to an inspired Lene Krog.

But her sister Tara got the show back on the road by defeating Marita Engzelius by 2&1 and was one under par in the process.

Northern Ireland’s Danielle McVeigh was an easy 4&3 winner over Tonje Daffinrud to secure victory for Ireland. Marian Riordan lost the last match but that was only of academic interest as the Irish team won 3-2. They now meet Scotland who had to pull out all the stops yesterday to dispose of Slovenia.
