In Europe, Gaelic Football outperforms Irish Soccer and Rugby

While Irish Soccer and Rugby hit rock bottom this autumn, Gaelic Football has risen to new heights in Europe – mainland Europe.

This weekend, November 3rd, Barcelona hosts the Gaelic Football European Championship Finals.
300 players from 20 Men’s and Women’s teams will arrive from Spain, France, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Denmark, Austria and Hungary to play 40 Gaelic Football matches.

Tournaments across the Continent, have been contested keenly throughout the year, Saturday’s tournament is the Final of the season, with the European Men’s & Ladies’ Championships, and the Men’s Shield being decided.

Men’s top prize will be contested by Budapest, Paris, Luxembourg and Den Haag.  A last minute point separated Luxembourg and Den Haag in October’s tournament.

Barcelona V Munich - just one of the fascinating encounters, with eight teams competing for the Ladies Gaelic Football Championship.

Men’s Shield leaders Amsterdam (Holland) may be pipped for the overall European Shield Title if Rennes (Brittany) wins the Shield Tournament this weekend.
Copenhagen Team travels 1757 Km for this Tournament.

The success of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Europe “is down to the passion of 100’s of players who travel regularly, at their own expense, by plane and train, to play with pride for their European GAA Clubs. This can cost a player more than €3500 in a year.” according to Siasy Collins, Editor of Europeanirish.com, 10 years reporting on the GAA in Europe.

“The event is hosted and organized exclusively by the playing staff of Barcelona Gaels’ men’s and women’s teams, comprising over 60% local Catalans”  described Mick McGrath, Secretary Barcelona Gaels. “The Iberian region will have representatives from Barcelona, Madrid, Pamplona and Valencia. More than 600 spectators will watch the Finals” added Chairman Stephen Garland.

Top officials from Croke Park Dublin, including Director General of the GAA, Liam Mulvihill, will attend, marking the largest GAA event ever on the Continent.

“There is an increasing number of non-Irish players now playing Gaelic Football in Europe”, Tony Bass, European GAA County Board Secretary explained. “In the Maastricht GAA Club, for instance, the mix is 50/50 Dutch to Irish players”

At a time when Irish Soccer and Irish Rugby are at their lowest, Gaelic Football has never been stronger in Europe than it is today, with over a 1000 players in 25 Clubs!

Márta 3–17 - Seachtain na Gaeilge + other Irish Language items

A chara,

Táim ag scríobh chugat maidir le Seachtain na Gaeilge, féile a reáchtáiltear thart timpeall an domhain chun an Ghaeilge a spreagadh i measc an phobail gach bliain. Is féile í atá ag dul ar aghaidh ar feadh níos mó ná céad bliain anuas agus maireann sí ar feadh coicíse sna laethanta díreach roimh Lá Fhéile Pádraig, 3 – 17 Márta 2008.

Bheadh muid an-bhuíoch díbh dá mbeadh sibh in ann cabhrú linn trí imeachtaí a eagrú nó trí muid a chur i dteagmháil le comhlachtaí nó le heagraíochtaí a mbeadh suim acu páirt a ghlacadh i Seachtain na Gaeilge. Is í an aidhm atá againn ná go mbainfeadh Seachtain na Gaeilge aitheantas idirnáisiúnta amach feasta le deis a thabhairt d’Éireannaigh ar fud an domhain triail a bhaint as a dteanga dhúchais a labhairt nó chun a gcultúr a bhlaiseadh fiú muna mbíonn ann ach uair sa bhliain.

I measc na n-imeachtaí éagsúla a eagraíonn daoine bíonn quizeanna boird, céilithe, seisiúin cheoil agus go leor leor eile. Bíonn neart féidearthachtaí ann le linn na féile seo agus fáiltíonn muid roimh gach duine ar spéis leo páirt a ghlacadh inti. Beidh póstaeir, balúin agus lipéid ag dul d’éinne a chláraíonn imeachtaí linn.

Ní do Ghaeilgeoirí amháin atá an Fhéile. Tabhair cuairt ar ár Suíomh Idirlín dátheangach www.snag.ie.

Táimid ag súil go mór cloisteáil uait amach anseo.

I’m writing to remind you about Seachtain na Gaeilge, a festival that is organised all over the world every year in an effort to promote the Irish language and culture. The festival has been running for over a hundred years and runs for almost a fortnight in the days before St Patrick’s Day, 3 – 17 March 2008.

We would really appreciate it, and it would help us a great deal, if you could organise events or point us in the direction of companies, agencies or clubs and groups that might have an interest in what we do here. Our aim is that Seachtain na Gaeilge will be internationally popular and those with Irish connections and an interest in the culture, will have the chance to give speaking their native tongue a try, or to have a taste of Irish culture if only once a year.

Groups organise events such as table quizzes, céilís and music sessions among many others. There are many possibilities during the festival and we welcome all with an interest to partake. Anyone who registers an event with us will receive support materials, posters, balloons, stickers, in the post.

The festival is not just for Gaeilgeoirí (Irish speakers). Take a look at our bilingual website www.snag.ie.

We look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

A Chara

Ba mhaith liom iarraidh ort páirt a ghlacadh, le do thoil, i staidéar atá á dheanamh agam ar son Dr Rosemary Orr ó Ollscoil Utrecht san Ísiltír agus European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).  Lig dom a chur in iúl duit cad is cúis leis an staidéar.

Cúlra an staidéir

Tá eolas éigin ag gach éinne ar an bhfón póca agus feicimid gach aon lá conas a bhfuil dul chun cinn á dheanamh leo.   Inniú tá fóin póca atá

cosúil le ríomhairí.  Is féidir leat ríomhphoist a scríobh agus a sheoladh, agus doiciméid a stóráil, ar na gutháin.  Is féidir ríomhairí agus gutháin a úsáid chun ceol a imirt agus teilifís a bhreathnú.

Forbairt nua, is ea a bheith in ann ordú labhartha a thabhairt do ríomhairí agus gutháin.in áit uimhreacha nó téacsanna a chlóscríobh.  Mar shampla, le labhairt amhain, is féidir leat iarraidh orthu doiciméad a shabháil, do theaghlach a ghlaoch, nó teachtaireacht do dhuine a sheoladh.  Le orduithe labhartha, is féidir iarraidh orthu doras uathoibritheach a oscailt, ceol a seinm, nó ceist a iarraidh faoi cathain a bhfuil an chéad traein eile ag taisteal go dtí Baile Átha Chliath.  Is féidir leat an t-iomlán é seo a dhéanamh ag úsáid orduithe labhartha.

Táim ag iarraidh cóir orduithe labhartha caighdeánacha a fhorbairt chun iad a úsáid le gléasanna  aitheanta gutha.  Tá an rud céanna á

dheanamh le theangacha Eorpacha agus Domhanda eile.

Cén fáth a dheantar é?

Más féidir leis na comhlachtaí a sholátharíonn an teicneolaíocht seo, an cóir céanna a úsáid do ordaithe labhartha, ní bheadh ar custaméirí na h-orduithe a fhoghlaim ach uair amháin, rud a dheinfeadh an teichneolaíocht i bhfad níos éasca le h-úsaid.  Ní  don aos óg amháin an teichneolaíocht seo;  Is obair tábhachtach é a bhfeadfadh cabhair a thabhairt do dhaoine le  riachtanais speisialta, mar shampla, daoine a bhfuil mallachar radhairc orthu, daoine nach féidir leo scríobh nó léamh go h-éasca, nó daoine a bhfuil deacracht acu téacs a chlóscríobh.  Tá córacha le haghaidh cúig teanga faoi láthair agus tá an liosta ag méadú an t-am ar fad.!    Ba chóir go mbeadh an Gaeilge ann.

An t-Agallamh

Chun teacht ar chaighdeán beacht, ba mhaith le ETSI dul chun cainte le úsáideoirí ó na theangacha go léir.  Sa staidéar seo, tugtar cur síos don agallaí ar chuid de na feidhmeanna a dhéanfaí de ghnáth ar eochaircheap (tá súil agam gurb tusa ceann de na h-agallaí seo).  Ansin, iarrfaí, céard iad na focail oiriúnach, i  tuairim na h-agallaí, ar na bhfeidmeanna sin ms. i glaoch chuig doctúir  an deirfeadh tú “Cur glaoch ar an dochtúir” nó “Glaoch an dochtúir”.  Baileoidh an staidéar seo na h-orduithe a úsáideann an chuid is mó daoine, sa dóigh go ndéanfaí  eochaircheapa chomh cáirdiúil agus is féidir.

Toisc gur Gaeilgeoir tú, táim ag scríobh chugat chun páirt a ghlacadh san obair tábhachtach seo. Cuirfear ainmneacha na h-agallaí go léir isteach  i nduais chrannchur.  Ní thógfaidh an agallamh ar

an teileafón ach 45 nóiméad ama.  Cuirfear freagraí na gceisteanna go léir  i mbunacar sonraí gan ainm, sé sin le rá ní cuirfear do ainm in aice le do fhreagraí.  Má tá aon ceisteanna agat faoin agallamh, nó cad a dhéanfar leis na freagraí, is féidir leat teagmháil a dhéanamh liom.  Feicfidh tú mo sheoltaí ríomhphost agus Skype agus uimhir gutháin thíos.

Cuirfidh mé glaoch ort I gceann cúpla lá munar miste leat.  Más aontaíonn tú le páirt a ghlacadh sa tionscnamh seo, socróidh mé dáta agus am leat chun an agallamh a dhéanamh.  Tá súil agam go nglacfaidh tú páirt sa tionscnamh seo, mar tugann sé rochtain, sna theangacha go léir, ar fhorbairtí teicnólaíochta agus iad ag teacht chun margadh.

Le dea-ghuí,

Máire Ní Shé.

Remembering Old Ireland

Ever wondered what life was like in Ireland before the arrival of the famous Celtic Tiger?  Well, wonder no more for a double CD of 18 true stories - Mystical Irish Musings Vol.1 - about the old country has just been released at www.irishmusings.com

The author/narrator, Brian Mac a’  Bhaird, is a direct descendent of the Bards of ancient Ireland . The stories cover many aspects of Irish life and range from the Great Famine of the 1840s onward covering history, tragedy, traditions, joy and humour and offer a rare and precious insight into life in the Emerald Isle in former times.

The double CD package contains 2 hours and 18 minutes of top quality listening and a six-page photographic insert.

The material will resonate with anyone with a drop of Irish blood (and, indeed, those with none!) – those with memories of their own youth and those who listened as children to their parents, grandparents and neighbours.

Some people may find it difficult to visualise an Ireland without a booming economy but Mystical Irish Musings will open a window on a different landscape – social, cultural and historical.

Brian is a retired secondary school teacher and lives in Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan with his wife Síle. They have three grown-up children.

A Gaelic language version - Aislingí Fánacha Cuid 1 - is also available from the same website.

Kerryman Jed O’Connor of Costa Gaels explained that as the matches are played on converted ’soccer’ pitches, the Kick-out is from the hands, encouraging players to pass the ball through the field, rather than drive the ball to the other side of the field with one kick.

These matches always prove to be highly entertaining, exciting and the final is usually been decided by the narrowest of margins, with just a last minute kick winning the Cup last year.

If you are nearby this weekend, come along for Gaelic Football on the Costa del Sol!

Barcelona November 3rd
Barcelona Gaels are proud to announce that they will once again be hosting the finals of the 2007 European Gaelic Football Championships on November 3rd .

Last year this really successful tournament was the largest gathering of Gaelic football clubs ever to take place on Continental Europe and this year it will be even bigger.

We are expecting in excess of 300 men and women who will do battle for the honours in 3 pitches in the Catalan capital hosted by Barcelona´s own legendary club the Barcelona Gaels.

The standard of the football and organisation has been increasing every year in the ‘ County Europe ‘ over the last years and the event is a must see for any sporting fans who find themselves in Barcelona on the day.

Cork Gaelic Football, Rep Ireland Soccer, Irish Rugby, Irish top athletes - what a disastrous 2 weeks

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Cork looked good against Meath. Had a strong midfield, accurate passing, fluid play up the field, and a route to scores.

Irish Rugby team - 3 time winners of the Triple Crown, with many players from last year’s Heineken Cup Champions Munster - adnd semi-finalists Leinster.

Irish Soccer - has grown to a team of Premiership players - from a panel of a couple of Premiership players and the rest made up of reserves and English Championship players. They had key matches against Slovakia and Czech Republic - and had a 4-0 win away to Denmark as a warmup.

Ireland’s O’Rourke, Gillick, Hession, Cragg at the World Championships - going well in their buildups …

####

This past fortnight. Cork played in the All-Ireland Final - and left all their ‘accurate passing’, fluid play, route to scores, and dominant midfield - somewhere else. They didn’t turn up for the final. Cork were hammered

Rep of Ireland Soccer is a bit of a misfit here, as they have been going badly since they lost to Cyprus losing 5-2, in fact before that they were hammered by Holland.
But after a 4-0 win against Denmark in an August friendly - hopes were high that 2 wins or - a win and a draw - against Slovakia and Czech Rep would bring Rep Ireland back into contention for a place in the Euro Championship Finals next year. Ireland have on paper a stronger team that both these oppositions.
Ireland gave away a last minute goal against Slovakia - after Ireland’s passes went continuously astray throughout the match, few finding another Irish player.
All the huff and puff was useless without the ball - or not keeping it when Ireland did have it. Rep Ireland were the same against Czech Republic, losing 0-1 but playijg well for the past 30 mintues -being almost an ‘Irish morale victory’ - I bet you love that  rubbish!

The performance for the first 35 minutes was simply appalling and heartless. The performance against Slovakia was simply poor football - not being able to pass the ball. ANyway - Ireland failed against both.

Irish Rugby were hammered during the summer against Argentina - twice. In the warmups Ireland were beaten by Scotland, and should have been by Italy.
Against Namibia and Georgia - and eventually France, Ireland lost all the passing, instincts and bravery that had been evident when they won the Triple crown.  For htis wrold cup, Ireland seemed untrained, heartless and passionsless for all matches.

Irish best athletes at the World Championships - were 6th place results - by hammer thrower Eileen OKeefe, and 20 K Walker Robert Heffernan. Neither of these had much impact on the media before these events. Most Irish had never heard of these 2 athletes. The other athletes failed miserably to reach their potential.

So if you are a Cork Sports fan - this past month has been miserable.

Is there something in the Irish syche, that results in poor performance on the big occasion?

(of course There are exceptions to this, but it is rare - and perhaps that’s what makes it wonderful)

Or are Irish expectations simply too high for a Nation of our size?

GAA: 3 goal horrorshow and losing midfield battle, decisive as Kerry are crowned for Champions

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Kerry outplayed, outnumbered and outclassed Cork`s midfield duo at Croke Park.
A freshair punch by Cork’s Goalie Alan Quirke - Colm ‘The Gouch’ Cooper  for Kerry reading the advance of the No.1 let his fist double on the ball, over the advancing keeper - into Cork’s empty net.

Kerry missed many chances in the first half of the All Ireland Final,  and their wides tally kept Cork in the match, with just that one goal seperating the sides at the break.

Golden rule for a ‘back’/defender -  don’t go back across your own goal with the ball.
Instead of getting  the ball out quickly and long from defence, Cork’s short hand-passing game from the full-backline was to prove self-destructive dynamite. As the 2nd half opened, Cork took a series of handpasses - back across their own goal - Ger Spillane tried to reach Alan Quirke who had moved to free space on the other side of his square. But as Spillane was dispossessed, and Quirke was outside his square, Kerry’s Donaghy had an easy kick to an empty goal.
Later in the half, Cork’s full back Quinlan collided with Alan Quirke under a high ball, with both on the ground, Kerry’s Donaghy had another simple kick into yet-again another empty net.

3 calamities - out of Defensive naivity - take away those 3 ‘mistakes’ and the All-Ireland Final would have been a different match. If Cork played Kerry again today - could it be a different result?

Kerry won much more ball that Cork did, crucially in the midfield, an area Cork had been supreme in the Semi-Final. Cork were also too slow in buildups to shooting for scores, all too often being dispossessed by a Kerry side who always were prepared to shoot from anywhere, - sometimes proving a potential weekness.
Kerry proved that in an All-Ireland Final - you get One chance - no Second chances.
This was when it counted - this IS when Kerry delivered.
