Equestrian: Ireland wins Norway Nations Cup after tight finish - Flynn wins Grand Prix

Monday, June 25th, 2007

SHOW JUMPING - IRELAND WINS NORWAY NATIONS CUP AFTER TIGHT
FINISH - FLYNN TAKES GRAND PRIX
IRELAND were triumphant on the last day (Sunday) of the four-star
show in Drammen, Norway, with victory in both the Norway Nations’ Cup
and the Drammen Grand Prix.

In a tightly-fought finish, Ireland shared first place in the
Nations’ Cup with Norway, both teams finishing on eight faults. But
Team Manager Robert Splaine sent Malahide-based Conor Swail out to do
battle on against Norway’s Geir Gulliksen on to
decide the outright winner, and Swail jumped clear, while Gulliksen
had one fence down, giving Ireland the trophy.

Meanwhile, due to heavy rain on Saturday, the Norway Grand Prix was
decided by a jump-off of all riders who had scored a double clear
round in the Nations’ Cup today. This left Ireland’s Comdt. Gerry
Flynn and the Irish-bred competing against Norway’s Stein
Endresen and the Netherlands’s Henk van de Pol, but once again the
Irish rider proved too good for the opposition, jumping clear in the
fastest time.

Afterwards Team manager Robert Splaine said: << It was a great day
for Ireland - we had first and second in the speed class this
morning, we won the Nations' Cup, and then we won the Grand Prix.
There was a great team spirit, and I have to say it is a pleasure to
work with these lads, they are of the highest calibre, and today it
certainly showed.>>

6.SHOW JUMPING - IRELAND WINS AUSTRIAN NATIONS CUP

A JUBILANT Chef d’Equipe Tommy Brennan announced Ireland’s triumph in
the Austrian Nations’ Cup in Linz this afternoon (Friday) when the
team of Conor Swail, Commandant Gerry Flynn, Ryan Crumley and Shane
Breen proved unstoppable in both rounds, finishing on 12 faults, with
Italy the nearest challengers on 24 faults.

rounds. I am delighted with the result.>>

Ireland led from the first round, with Conor Swail on and
Commdt. Gerry Flynn with   both delivering clear rounds,
while Shane Breen had a single fence down. Ryan Crumley dropped two
poles with , and did not go forward into the second round,
where Swail and Flynn repeated their faultless performances. Breen
and accumulated eight faults second time out.

Ireland were not so fortunate in today’s other Nations Cup, in
Copenhagen, Denmark, where 12 faults kept them out of the cut for the
second round entirely. Jessica Kurten and had an
uncharacteristic elimination, while Cameron Hanley had two fences
down with . Cian O’Connor and Nations Cup debutant
had a single mistake, while Capt. Shane Carey and Foyle>, the combination also making their first appearance at this
level, jumped clear. But it was not enough to qualify for the second
