The week before the event the Irish received some disappointing news when they were placed (after a re-draw) into Division 5 from 4. This was due to some complex reason for which we have not yet received a satisfactory explanation.
That said, the team was placed in a group with Norway, Sri Lanka and Peru with the top team of this group going on to play for promotion.
First up was Norway whom Ireland recently defeated during the Helvetia Cup. We matched that winning result with another strong 4-1 victory getting off to a great start.
The second match proved to be very tough against a strong Sri Lankan side. All matches were closely fought. But after a fantastic mixed with the score at 2-2, Huang Bing and Scott Evans won a very tense match giving Ireland a narrow 3-2 win.

Alex Sim is in Tallinn Estonia competing in Men Singles Badminton this weekend 1st-4th June.
The draw should be available tomorrow.
In Spain at the end of May, Scott Evans, Alexander Sim, William O’Neill and Daniel Magee entered Men’s Singles, each losing his opening game.
IN Womens Singles Chloe Magee won her opening singles match to move to the last 32.
With Karen Huang, Chloe played through to the Quarter Finals of Womens Doubles and lost 30-28 in the 3rd set tie-break, and the partnership that beat them went on to contest the overall Womens Doubles final. good to see them competing at the highest level of the event.
Chloe and Daniel Magee won a round of the Mixed Doubles, and Alex played with a Welsh partner in the same event.
On the end of Day 3, before the Finals day, all Irish interest ended.
But well done, and great experience in this challenging Badminton Open Event.

What now of little Madeleine McCann?
Is the little girl still alive somewhere and all the current distraction taking from finding her?
Or has she died - did she die that evening - are her parents involved in her death, and a huge cover-up- or is it a huge set-up ? Is there Portuguese police pressure to find some resolution to this - are Gerry and Kate an easy obvious target? Is there evidence planted? or is this something much more sinister - is it a horror story to think that Maddie’s parents are involved in orchestrating her dissappearance - and utimate death?
So many questions - no answers - no little Madeleine.
In Ireland, The Robert Holohan case with communities and a whole nation out looking for a little boy who had vanished - to find a story much closer to home of his death at the hands of a neighbour ‘friend’, and a disposal of his body in a bogland … are there similarities to be drawn here? Time will tell - or will we ever really know?

Men’s Singles Scott was made fight to the last points in the first set, but won 23-21, before winning the 2nd 21-14. 18 year old but experience of one much older, Chloe won the Women’s Singles 21-9, 21-12.
This ensured an Irish win. Mark (who used to be a top 40 ranking partnership with brother Bruce) paired with Donal winning the first set 21-15, lost the 2nd 20-22, before also losing the 3rd by just 2 points 19-21 in Men’s Doubles.
Chloe and Karen secured a final match win for a 4-1 overall win against probably the favourites of the group.
Next day 18th Jan, the Irish faced the Spanish, winning the first the men’s singles - well done Scott; then the Women’s singles in a 3 set thriller, Mark and Donal won in 2 straight sets in 25 minutes; Karen and Chloe also won in straight sets. Ireland’s Mixed pair lost the 2nd set having won the first, and lost out 17-21 in the 3rd.
But a 4-1 win again was very satisfactory hard day’s work. On Friday 19th, Ireland won 4-1 against Cyprus, winning the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Lisa Lynas played well but lost in straight sets in the Women’s singles.
As group winners, Ireland were guaranteed a top 4 place finish, each of the 4 group winners playing off for 1-4 places. First on Saturday was Estonia, Ireland winning the Mixed Doubles in straight sets. Both Scott and Chloe lost their respective Singles ties in 3 sets each. So Ireland trailed 1-2 with the 2 doubles matches to be played.
Donal and Mark played attacking badminton winning 21-10, 21-6. Karen and Chloe with a tight first set won the 2nd set by 6 points, and winning the match in 22 minutes, and claiming an outright 3-2 win for Ireland.
Superb! Now a showdown for a 1st or 2nd place finish against hosts Iceland.
Sunday 21st January Ireland played in the Final of the Helvetia Cup. Mixed Doubles - Karen and Donal lost the first set, but won the next 2 sets, 21-13, 12-4, to give Ireland the precious 1-0 lead.
Chloe Magee lost her first set by just 3 points, 18-21, and the 2nd set was agonizingly close, but she lost by the same margin, as the overall tie was all squared at 1-1.
Scott Evans won his singles in convincing style 21-11, 21-15, to regain the lead for Ireland, needing 1 win from the final 2 encounters - Men’s and Women’s Doubles. Chloe and Karen lost in straight sets 21-16, 21-16. Ireland 2 - 2 Iceland
Final Match of the Championships: Donal O’ Halloran and Mark Topping in Men’s Doubles. They won the first set 21-8. It was looking good. The 2nd set was tied as the score reached 20-20, and played out to 23, Ireland just losing 21-23.
The 3rd set was also really close, but Iceland won the set 21-18 winning the match and the Trophy, Ireland having been so close.
Ireland’s final placing (top 2) guarantees the Irish team promotion to the main European Championships to be held in Denmark in April, 2008. Well done to all, on an outstanding display by the Irish Team.
