Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Athletics:
Top European Hurdlers Callenge O’Rourke At The Odyssey Arena
European Hurdles medallists Jenny Kallur (Sweden) and Christina Vukicevic (Norway) will race against current Irish World Indoors Champion Derval O’Rourke.
in the Woodie’s DIY Irish Indoor Championships on 26th and 27th January at the Odyssey Arena Belfast. The event is organised and promoted by Athletics Northern Ireland and the Athletic Association of Ireland and in conjunction with Belfast City Council and Sport NI as funding partners.

24-year old Jenny Kallur’s the twin sister, Susanna is the current European hurdles champion and 2007 world ranked number 2. Jenny took the silver medal behind winner Susannah in the 60m hurdles event at the Madrid European Indoor Championships in 2005.

The Swede’s current indoor time should provide ideal competition for O’Rourke who beat Kallur when taking the European Outdoor silver medal in 2006 in a new Irish record of 12.72 seconds. Also taking the start line will be Kallur’s training partner Christina Vukicevic. The 20 year old Norwegian is the World Outdoor junior silver medallist from Beijing in 2006.

Cork Gaelic Football, Rep Ireland Soccer, Irish Rugby, Irish top athletes - what a disastrous 2 weeks

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Cork looked good against Meath. Had a strong midfield, accurate passing, fluid play up the field, and a route to scores.

Irish Rugby team - 3 time winners of the Triple Crown, with many players from last year’s Heineken Cup Champions Munster - adnd semi-finalists Leinster.

Irish Soccer - has grown to a team of Premiership players - from a panel of a couple of Premiership players and the rest made up of reserves and English Championship players. They had key matches against Slovakia and Czech Republic - and had a 4-0 win away to Denmark as a warmup.

Ireland’s O’Rourke, Gillick, Hession, Cragg at the World Championships - going well in their buildups …

####

This past fortnight. Cork played in the All-Ireland Final - and left all their ‘accurate passing’, fluid play, route to scores, and dominant midfield - somewhere else. They didn’t turn up for the final. Cork were hammered

Rep of Ireland Soccer is a bit of a misfit here, as they have been going badly since they lost to Cyprus losing 5-2, in fact before that they were hammered by Holland.
But after a 4-0 win against Denmark in an August friendly - hopes were high that 2 wins or - a win and a draw - against Slovakia and Czech Rep would bring Rep Ireland back into contention for a place in the Euro Championship Finals next year. Ireland have on paper a stronger team that both these oppositions.
Ireland gave away a last minute goal against Slovakia - after Ireland’s passes went continuously astray throughout the match, few finding another Irish player.
All the huff and puff was useless without the ball - or not keeping it when Ireland did have it. Rep Ireland were the same against Czech Republic, losing 0-1 but playijg well for the past 30 mintues -being almost an ‘Irish morale victory’ - I bet you love that  rubbish!

The performance for the first 35 minutes was simply appalling and heartless. The performance against Slovakia was simply poor football - not being able to pass the ball. ANyway - Ireland failed against both.

Irish Rugby were hammered during the summer against Argentina - twice. In the warmups Ireland were beaten by Scotland, and should have been by Italy.
Against Namibia and Georgia - and eventually France, Ireland lost all the passing, instincts and bravery that had been evident when they won the Triple crown.  For htis wrold cup, Ireland seemed untrained, heartless and passionsless for all matches.

Irish best athletes at the World Championships - were 6th place results - by hammer thrower Eileen OKeefe, and 20 K Walker Robert Heffernan. Neither of these had much impact on the media before these events. Most Irish had never heard of these 2 athletes. The other athletes failed miserably to reach their potential.

So if you are a Cork Sports fan - this past month has been miserable.

Is there something in the Irish syche, that results in poor performance on the big occasion?

(of course There are exceptions to this, but it is rare - and perhaps that’s what makes it wonderful)

Or are Irish expectations simply too high for a Nation of our size?

World Championships Osaka Day 1: Roisin McGettigan, Fionnuala Britton

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Japan Day 1:
Irish athletes got off to the best possible start at the World championships in Osaka overnight. Roisin McGettigan ran a confident race in the first heat of the women’s 3,000m steeplechase. She went into the lead from the gun and was in complete control, leading through 1,000m in 3:11.54, 2,000m in 6:22.81 before eventually finishing fourth in 9:39.41 and an automatic qualifying spot in the final on Monday.

Fionnuala Britton was in heat three and the European silver medallist in the under 23 cross country championships had a much tougher assignment. However, she battled all the way and finished seventh in 9:42.38, just one second outside her PB, and good enough to go forward as a fastest loser.

Interesting to note that competitors had to clear five barriers on each lap - including the first.

A very positive start for the Irish team.

Athletics - Robert Heffernan - after 20k walk, just 82 seconds behind the winner

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Sunday 25th Aug:
The men`s 20k walk saw Irish champion and record holder Robert Heffernan put in the performance of his life to finish a brilliant sixth. Right from the gun he placed himself perfectly and was never too far off the medal positions.

This was a battling performance by the Corkman and continued the outstanding efforts he has been making in the past months that saw him set new Irish records over 20k on the roads and 5,000m on the track.

The extremely warm weather undoubtedly made life difficult but he did not let it affect him as he raced to his best ever placing
