More Irish people head to Europe, than to UK or USA

Cork Ireland, January 23rd 2008

A recent report by the CSO indicates that between the years 2006 and 2007, at least 25% of all Irish Emigrants settled in Continental Europe (CSO Population/ Migration Report December 07).
This is greater than those travelling to the UK 23.9%, and more than 3 times greater than the percentage travelling to the USA, both the traditional destinations for Irish emigrants.

It is estimated that approximately 300,000 Irish people have made their homes across Europe, and with 3.5 million trips by Irish residents to the Continent in 2006, Ireland’s relationship with her European neighbours has deepened considerably.
The Irish emigrants have settled in their new countries, raised families, and have sown the roots of future generations. As in the past, they have brought with them the wealth of culture that is unique to the Irish, a tradition long since enjoyed in both England and the States. A testament to this is the increasing number of Irish Clubs and Societies that have grown up across Europe, catering for both the Irish and native Europeans all of whom have a shared love of Irish Culture, Sport and Music.
For those interested in the Irish Scene across Europe, there is one unique central point – EuropeanIrish.com.
The brainchild of well travelled Irishman, Siasy Collins, this website is the focal point for all the information one needs to enjoy the Irish scene across Europe.
For the past 5 years the site has been managed on a part-time basis. Since May 2007, however, the emphasis has been on upgrading the existing site, to provide Irish in Europe with the opportunity to connect with other Irish in Europe, and with similar interests.
Siasy Collins, Editor & Publisher, EuropeanIrish, having been based in Europe himself, and involved in the local Irish scene there, explained that Irish people in Europe - want to find where to watch the All-Ireland or Heineken Cup, and where to find Irish Dancing Schools, Bands, Festivals, Irish Sports & Social Clubs, The Irish Embassy, and a choice of more than 2200 Irish Pubs across the Continent, when any local Irish Entertainment or Sport Events are on, and European Irish News.
“The new look Europeanirish.com has a lot of new benefits for visitors. The website is easy to use & navigate. You can build your profile and meet others through M I N E, which is My Irish Network in Europe. You can also chat with others, create a personal story and add events, items or news”, Siasy added.
Irish in Europe can always feel close to home, with the short and lower cost flights, and now through this website one can tune-in live online to over 50 Irish Radio stations, and download free music, supplied by Irish bands based at home and in Europe.

With thousands visiting the website daily, EuropeanIrish.com has something added for everybody, whether you’re an Irish person living in Europe or planning travel to Europe, or whether you’re from Continental Europe, enjoying Irish music, culture, sports or pubs.
Do you know any Irish person in Europe? Let them know today.
Are you planning a trip there for a vacation, on business, to study or to live?
The Next step is simple – just click on www.EuropeanIrish.com, browse the site, stay a while and enjoy it.

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Aoife Kiely has taken the silver medal at the 2007 World Age Group Tumbling Championships at the Expo centre in Quebec, Canada - beating one Russian and the British tumblers in the 13-14 category.
Gillian Clarke also was placed 6th in the same event.

This is a key age to world gymnastics, so for an Irish girl to be defeating most in the world is a hugely significant achievement.

34 matches played in Paris- the European Gaelic Football Championships

Monday, October 15th, 2007
There were 34 Gaelic Football matches played in Paris at the European Gaelic Football Championships.
This is 50% of All the Matches in the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
The World Cup Rugby Championship is Professional and played over 6 weeks.
This skilled, entertaining and keenly contested European Gaelic Football Championship Tournament was played over 6 hours - by players who regularly travel at their own expense across the Continent, for the love of the game of Gaelic football, and to play with pride for their local European GAA club.

A Superb Gaelic Football Match between Luxembourg and The Hague proved a fitting Final to an outstanding and well organised European Gaelic Football Championship Tournament, in the French capital on Saturday 6th October.
A last kick in the game gave Luxembourg victory in the thrilling Final.

This past weekend, the 3rd Round of the European League was held in Paris .
These Championships were the penultimate Tournament with the Finale being held in Barcelona on the 3rd November.
The Ladies Football Championship Tournament was held in conjunction with the Men’s event.

Teams from all across Europe keenly contested no less than 34 Gaelic Football matches.
GAA Clubs from The Netherlands ( Amsterdam , The Hague , Maastricht ) , Luxembourg , Channel Islands (Guernsey, Jersey), France ( Paris , Nantes , Rennes ), Germany ( Munich ), Belgium ( Brussels ) and Spain ( Barcelona , Madrid ) took to the field.

There were teams competing for the European Championship Title, with The Hague , Jersey , Luxembourg and Paris all closing in on the overall 2007 title.
There were 8 clubs competing for the European Shield. Paris and Luxembourg each provided B teams, along with Maastricht , Nantes , Madrid , Amsterdam , Rennes and Barcelona .
The Ladies Championship had 6 teams - from Paris , Luxembourg / Madrid combination, Munich , Holland , Maastricht , and Barcelona .

In the Men’s Shield Final, just a single point separated the Holland ’s Maastricht from Brittany club Rennes , the Dutch side winning 0-06 to 0-05.
In the Ladies Football Final the Holland team with players from The Hague and Amsterdam, defeated the hosts Paris by 5 points, in a display of the best scoring that would put many Croke Park teams to shame, winning by a score-line of 2-6 to 0-7.
The Climax of the Day’s European Gaelic Football was a classic encounter between Luxembourg and The Hague .
Luxembourg won the final by the narrowest of margins, having lost to the same opposition by a point earlier in the day’s Round Robin.
Luxembourg Men are Champions in Paris .
Holland Ladies hold the trophy, and Maastricht Men took the Shield
Below are the results of the Paris tournament.

Tommy Makem, Irish Traditional & Folk great, dies

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Tommy Makem with banjo in hand, was the feature attraction at the Dallas Irish Festival 1996
The crowd sang, the enourmous tent felt like it swayed, as the charisma of one Tommy Makem got the entire festival audience in full voice, and laughter.

With his “inting of an intwing of an ido” on his banjo, I had the good fortune to be at one concert I will never forget.

That was more than 11 years ago. Makem and Clancy were the duo that graced several generations, including the Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem. The Aran sweaters and caps took USA by storm, with their lively entertaining, mix of song, wit, stories and fun, the word ‘craic’ was invented for Makem and the Clancy Brothers (headed by Liam).

On Wednesday, we mentioned Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem,  as we wrote here about Liam Clancy’s upcoming appearance at The Tonder Festival in Denmark.

Fergus Black in The Irish Independent reports that “His friend and former colleague Liam Clancy described him as an entertainer who had a knack of making an audience laugh and cry, holding them in the palm of his hand”

For The Independent Story of the legend Tommy Makem, who died at home in USA this week - http://www.independent.ie

The passing of one of our greats.

Have you seen 3-year old Madeleine McCann - now 4-years old since here birthday this past weekend

Friday, May 11th, 2007

What now of little Madeleine McCann?

Is the little girl still alive somewhere and all the current distraction taking from finding her?
Or has she died - did she die that evening - are her parents involved in her death, and a huge cover-up- or is it a huge set-up ? Is there Portuguese police pressure to find some resolution to this - are Gerry and Kate an easy obvious target? Is there evidence planted? or is this something much more sinister - is it a horror story to think that Maddie’s parents are involved in orchestrating her dissappearance - and utimate death?
So many questions - no answers - no little Madeleine.
In Ireland, The Robert Holohan case with communities and a whole nation out looking for a little boy who had vanished - to find a story much closer to home of his death at the hands of a neighbour ‘friend’, and a disposal of his body in a bogland … are there similarities to be drawn here? Time will tell - or will we ever really know?
