Friday, December 1st, 2006

Harrington maintains impressive form (examiner.ie)

The second round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge is currently underway in Sun City, with Padraig Harrington well placed following a solid first round.

PÁDRAIG HARRINGTON is in joint third place at the Nedback Golf Challenge, having led for much of the day. Harrington’s 69 was a continuation of his excellent late-season form — but it could have been even better.

The 35-year-old won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October and clinched his first Order of Merit title with second place at the Volvo Masters at Valderrama.

The Dubliner was also sixth at the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai, before beating world number one Tiger Woods in a play-off at the Dunlop Phoenix event in Japan earlier this month.

Irish games to kick off at club -Gulf Daily News

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

From Gulf Daily News - The Voice of Bahrain:

Irish games to kick off at club

A DAY of traditional Irish games will be held at the American Express Bahrain Rugby Football Club, Saar, on Friday.

http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/Story.asp?Article=161832&Sn=BNEW&IssueID=29240

Sportsmen and women from Bahrain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar will play Gaelic Football and the equally popular Hurling.

Gaelic Football can be described as a mixture of soccer and rugby, although it pre-dates both of these games.

It is a field game, which has developed as a distinct game similar to the progression of Australian Rules.

The ball used in Gaelic Football is round, slightly smaller than a soccer ball.

It can be carried in the hand for a distance of four steps and can be kicked or “hand-passed”, a striking motion with the hand or fist.

After every four steps the ball must be either bounced or “solo-ed”, an action of dropping the ball onto the foot and kicking it back into the hand.

You may not bounce the ball twice in a row. To score, you put the ball over the crossbar by foot or hand/fist for one point or under the crossbar and into the net by foot or the hand/fist in certain circumstances for a goal, the latter being the equivalent of three points.

Each team consists of 15 players.

Hurling is a game similar to hockey, in that it is played with a small ball and a curved wooden stick.

It is Europe’s oldest field game.
