All-Ireland Hurling Final - Limerick V Kilkenny, Live across Europe this Sunday

Friday, August 31st, 2007

The First Sunday of September is All-Ireland Hurling Final Day.
This Sunday watch the All-ireland Hurling Final Live across Continental Europe -

Find the venues that are showing the All-Ireland Finals only on EuropeanIrish.com.

http://www.europeanirish.com/Sport/GAA/liveirishsport.html

Limerick having fought bravely against Tipperary - taking a 2nd replay to eventually seperate the sides.
Limerick played for a titanic 60 minutes against Waterford in the Munster SemiFinal, but Waterford had powered away in the last 10 minutes  - when Waterford eventually won by 9 points.

Limerick regrouped and kept playing for the 70 minutes in the Quarter final clash with Clasre, defeating their neighbours by a comfortable 7 points.

Meeting the Deise again in the Semi-Final - who everyone expected to win the All-Ireland Final this year - presented a humongous task. No-one had given Limerick a chance against their Munster rivals, - except themselves.

Limerick powered to a 5-goal spree to win 5-11 to 2-15

And are in the All-Ireland Final against the might Cats of Kilkenny, this Sunday.

So - Munster were Heineken Cup Champions in 2006.

What does 2007 hold for Limerick - the All-Ireland hurling title?

Kilkenny are the Kings of Hurling in Ireland fo the past 7 years.
In Kilkenny, hurling is everything.

You don’t find too much Rugby, Gaelic Football or soccer in Kilkenny.

To wear the Kilkenny jersey on their Senior Hurling squad is something very special.
only All-Ireland victory is in the team’s sights. This is the ONLY goal, the only metric by which the team is measured.

Leinster Hurling - the 2 other traditional Hurling counties to compete with Kilkenny are Offaly and Wexford.
This year Kilkenny played Offaly first in the Leinster Semi-Final, Offaly who are complaining that they should be allowed back into nrext year’s league after a poor national League performance. Kilkenny scored a whopping 1-27 equivalent to 30 points  against Offaly, winning by 14 points.

In the Leinster Final the rest of the nation hoped that Wexford would give Kilkenny a tougher test.

Kilkenny scored 2-24, equivalent to 30 points again, winning this time by 15 points.

Kilkenny breezed through to the All-Ireland Quarter Final clash against Galway. Galway were under the steam of Ger Loughnane who had managed Clares successes in the 1995/97 era.

Galway kept with Kilkenny for the first 3/4 of the match. Kilkenny were having none of this Galway revival nonsense, and cracked in 3 goals and 22 points against Galway, (equivalent to 31 points), while Galway’s 1-18 left them 10 points adrift in the end.

Onto the All-Ireland Semi-Final for a clash against Tipperary - oh wait ! Tipperary are beaten in the Quarter Final clash by Wexford!
So Kilkenny meet Wexford in the All-Ireland Semi-Final - a team they already hammered a month earlier.

Wexford kept with Kilkenny for most fo the first half. But a match lasts for 70 minutes, not 25. Kilkenny ran out easy winners scoring 23 points to Wexford’s 13.

Kilkenny are in the All-Ireland Final, and the nearest any team has been in the championship- is 10 points down.

Who would your money be on?

–Sunday, August 5 -
Guinness SHC  Semi-Final
Kilkenny 0-23 Wexford 1-10

– Saturday, July 28 –
GUINNESS SHC QUARTER-FINALS
Kilkenny 3-22 Galway 1-18

– Sunday, July 1 –
GUINNESS LEINSTER SHC FINAL
Wexford 1-12 Kilkenny 2-24

– Sunday, June 10 –
GUINNESS LEINSTER SHC S-F
Offaly 1-13 Kilkenny 1-27

Kerry advance - it was not Dublin`s year

Monday, August 27th, 2007

When Dublin won the provincial final, many pundits and GAA followers were speculating that this was at last to be Dublin’s year.

Waterford in this year’s hurling championship defeated Kilkenny in the League final, Cork in the Munster semi-final, Limerick in the Munster final and Cork again  in the Quarter Final. because Waterford have been pushing at the door for the past number of years, ‘many pundits and GAA followers were speculating that this was at last to be Waterford’s year’.
The Deise of Waterford played the All-Ireland Semi-Final against Limerick, believing that this was their year, that they would play Kilkenny in the final and win the All-Ireland. No enough respect was given to the fact that they were not in the final yet, that until any team wins the All-Ireland Semi-Final, and then the Final, there is no such thing as this being anyone’s year.
Waterford failed in their semi-final clash against Limerick. Waterford will not play inthe All Ireland Final, they will not have a chance to put their team against Kilkenny. This was not Waterford’s year afterall.

Dublin have been branded with the same degrees of speculation and commentary. The Dubs have been there for the past number of years, and this was now to be their year. Only the All-Ireland champions stood in their way.
yesterday, Dublin’s nerves, misfired chances, untaken goal chances, and let’s not forget - a supreme Kerry team - with top players in every position on hte field - led to Dublin’s downfall at the semi-final stage and orchestrated an All-Ireland clash for Kerry with a derby favourite - Cork.

Kerry advance to meet Cork in the All-Ireland Gaelic Football Final on Sunday 16th September.

next Sunday don’t miss the All-Ireland Hurling Finals broadcast live across Europe at venues listed here:

Soccer: UEFA Women`s Championship – Romania 0 – 2 Republic of Ireland

Monday, August 27th, 2007

UEFA Women’s Championship – Group Two Qualifier Result
Romania 0 – 2 Republic of Ireland
Stephanie Curtis 12, 14

The game was played in temperatures well above 30 degrees Celsius but Noel King’s team dealt with the conditions well and dominated the hosts from early on.

This UEFA Championship qualifier kicked-of at 10.30 am local time to avoid the high temperatures which would follow in the afternoon, it took just 12 minutes before the Irish broke the deadlock, Olivia O’Toole controlled the ball just inside the Romanian half before she hooked a pin-point ball to Curtis at the edge of the box, Romanian keeper, Lenuta Pop was hesitant in coming for the ball and Curtis made no mistake as she coolly lobbed the ball over the on-rushing keeper and into the back of the net.

Soccer - Is Ireland turning the tide under Staunton

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Has the tide begun to turn for Steve Staunton, or does Wednesday`s 4-0 win over Denmark disguise the 2 Danish misses in the opening 20 minutes, that would have completely changed the complexion of this encounter?

Robbie Keane scored a good a well-taken goal at 29 minutes, and a second rebounding from the keeper off Keane’s shoulder into the goal just before halftime, to save our Aarhus.
A good run for Irish fringe players who played well and Shane Long scoring twice in the 2nd half will have done his own prospects no harm at all. Winning 4-0 away from home will also have done wonders for Staunton’s own prospects.

The difference between the team now and last year, is that the Irish are now on a run of good form - and entering 2 crucial matches on the back of recent success is the right frame of mind-  as long as the frame of mind is matched by Staunton with strategy, game plan, management and motivtion of the players - then.

On Saturday 8th September Ireland plays Slovakia in Bratislava, KO : 20:30 local time (19:30 irish time). Rep Ireland needs to win this match.

4 days later, 12th September, the Irish team cross the border some 300 miles away to Prague, and will line out against the Czechs (KO 20:30  Local time - 19:30 Irish time).
A win in this encounter would push Rep Ireland in the right direction, in this noting-is-certain group.

In October Ireland play Germany and Cyprus at home. Even if ireland’s place is looking good at that stage, a huge potential banana skin awaits us in our final match away to Wales in Cardiff.

Will Ireland be in contention right to the end?
Will Ireland’s push of a Qualification place dissappear in September, or become stronger in September?
Will it be glorious or hard luck, or hopeless… the next 3 months will reveal alot about the Irish Soccer team, the players who wear the shirt and the manager behind the suit.
Is the tide turning, or is this just a wave about to crash to shore?

Rugby: Has the spark gone from Ireland`s game?

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Just 10 months ago, Ireland were defeating South Africa, Australia, which came after superb Leinster and Munster European Heineken Cup campaigns, and a fierce-some Six-Nations performance - against every team except Scotland, and the last minutes of the France match.

I am beginning to wonder, that although that was only 5 months ago, did the ireland team peak in performance, ambition and motivation then? Did the last matches of the 6 nations take the gusto from the Irish, having given everything to hammer Italy, to see the title pulled from their grasp by a late French contraversial try against Scoltand. I wonder was that the start of the rot…

Since then Leinster dissapeared from the Heineken Cup, Munster vanished timidly, nothing near either’s performances the year before - the same players that don the Irish shirt.

The Irish went to Argentina and got defeated - twice, hammered the second time 16-0.
Ireland have played their warmup matches against Scotland and Itay - losing to Scotland 31-21, and the match against Italy took a dubious contraversial try in the dying seconds to save Ireland from a 16-20 defeat to Italy.

Where is the passion and flair that was there back during the Six-Nations. It seems like a different team. Are they tired? Has the fire gone out some what?

Nothing like entering a tournament like the World Cup with a team playing in top form, but the Irish are not, and I fear for a poor World Cup, after so much seemed promising just 5 months ago.

World Championships Osaka Day 1: Roisin McGettigan, Fionnuala Britton

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Japan Day 1:
Irish athletes got off to the best possible start at the World championships in Osaka overnight. Roisin McGettigan ran a confident race in the first heat of the women’s 3,000m steeplechase. She went into the lead from the gun and was in complete control, leading through 1,000m in 3:11.54, 2,000m in 6:22.81 before eventually finishing fourth in 9:39.41 and an automatic qualifying spot in the final on Monday.

Fionnuala Britton was in heat three and the European silver medallist in the under 23 cross country championships had a much tougher assignment. However, she battled all the way and finished seventh in 9:42.38, just one second outside her PB, and good enough to go forward as a fastest loser.

Interesting to note that competitors had to clear five barriers on each lap - including the first.

A very positive start for the Irish team.

Athletics - Robert Heffernan - after 20k walk, just 82 seconds behind the winner

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Sunday 25th Aug:
The men`s 20k walk saw Irish champion and record holder Robert Heffernan put in the performance of his life to finish a brilliant sixth. Right from the gun he placed himself perfectly and was never too far off the medal positions.

This was a battling performance by the Corkman and continued the outstanding efforts he has been making in the past months that saw him set new Irish records over 20k on the roads and 5,000m on the track.

The extremely warm weather undoubtedly made life difficult but he did not let it affect him as he raced to his best ever placing

1 108 Jefferson Pérez ECU 1:22:20
2 103 Francisco Javier Fernández ESP 1:22:40
3 111 Hatem Ghoula TUN 1:22:40
4 113 Eder Sánchez MEX 1:23:36
5 124 Giorgio Rubino ITA 1:23:39
6 116 Robert Heffernan IRL 1:23:42
7 118 Luke Adams AUS 1:23:52
8 112 Erik Tysse NOR 1:24:10
9 102 Ilya Markov RUS 1:24:35
10 128 Alex Schwazer ITA 1:24:39 in international competition.

Later Joanne Cuddihy continued the great start to the championships with a third place finish in the second heat of the 400m. Her time of 51.55 was a season’s best and she qualifies automatically for tomorrow’s semi-final (1.10pm Irish time).

Michelle Carey, Derval O’Rourke, Roisin McGettigan and Fionnuala Britton are all in action tomorrow in what should be a very busy day for the Irish

Boxing: Bernard gets Dunne and Kiko-d on Saturday

Monday, August 27th, 2007

The bout began, and Bernard Dunne against some advice, went for his opponent, Kiko Martinez from the start, instead of taking his time to get to know his opponent, and keeping him at arms length, and working his own defence.

This decision openned Bernard Dunne’s defence, and when the Spaniard Kiko came at Dunne straight from the bell, Bernard tried to counter attack - but landed on the canvas with an opening blow to the top of his head.

Not shaken, it would seem, Dunne was straight back up to his feet, gesturing that he had slipped. Moments later he was knocked down again.

When he was back on his feet after a 2nd count, Kiko la Sensacion came in for the kill, a barage of punches left Dunne stunned - the referee stepped in as Dunne dropped to one knee. All over.

Hockey -Ireland 10 – 0 Czech Republic – Men`s EuroHockey Nations Championship. Relegation depends on England V France

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Ireland`s men ended their European tournament in emphatic style and have done everything in their power to avoid relegation. Now they must sit and wait for the outcome of England v France. All England need is a point against France, but a defeat for the home side will result in relegation and ensure Ireland’s survival in the Championship.

Ireland got the best possible start to the game with an early goal from Mark Gleghorne who drag flicked the ball straight into the top left hand corner on the fourth minute. John Jermyn followed suit in the 19th minute with a successful penalty corner routine when he placed his flick past the diving Filip Neussar to double the Irish lead.

The Irish proved there really were on form today when Karl Burns intercepted an aerial ball to win Ireland a free hit which was played quickly down the right, for Magee to receive a cross into the circle and tuck the ball into the bottom left of the Czech goal. A minute before half time Jermyn, unmarked in the circle, drove the ball across the face of the goal for Phelie Maguire to slide passed the keeper for Ireland’s fourth goal.

The Irish started the second half as eagerly as the first and wasted no time in putting more scores on the board, only six minutes in, Butler picked up the ball in the Czech half to pass to Jermyn who ambled unhindered into the Czech circle and bury his shot into the top left hand corner, for his second goal of the game and Ireland’s fifth.

Jermyn didn’t waste anytime getting his hat trick which came in the 56th minute of play, the floodgates were well and truly open at this stage with the Irish attack showing no signs of relenting.

Mark Gleghorne caused the Czech defence some problems on the left hand side when he drove along the backline to slip the ball back to Andy Barbour, who dove to deflect the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

Butler created Ireland’s eight goal when he passed unselfishly to Shaw in the circle whose reverse stick strike hit the back of the net to set Ireland on the way to double figures. Ireland continued to pile on the pressure to convert another penalty corner through a Gleghorne drag flick for their ninth and in the dying moments of the game Ireland made it to double figures when Barbour finished off a Gleghorne pass to put the ball passed a luckless Filip Neussar in the Czech goal.

Passmore was obviously happy with his team’s performance today “This was a fantastic aggressive performance, we stuck to the game plan throughout and we got the number of goals to stay up – if France beat England”

“It is important to beat lower ranked teams well and that gives us confidence going into the qualifiers” he continued.

It now also looks likely that Ireland’s Olympic qualifiers will be in New Zealand, with Egypt, New Zealand and Great Britain.
