There were good Irish performances in all races in the recent European Mountain Running Championships held in Cauterets, France. World Youths, European Under 23 Report
As the European U23 championships draw to an end there was disappointment yesterday as Andrew Ledwith, no doubt feeling the effects of his American season, finished 19th in the 10,000m.
Sharon Heveran was 10th in the high jump with a season’s best of 1.82m

Rose Ann Galligan, another athlete after a long American season, joins Linda Byrne in the final of the 1,500m later today.

At the World Youths championships everything that could go wrong did go wrong as he failed to register a mark in his discus qualifying group

And there was more bad news as Alistair Cragg dropped ot of the 5,000m in Rome on Friday night. David Gillick was eight in the 400m in 45.81, someway off his Irish record.

Ferrybank club success at Oordegem Belgium
Mairead Murphy became the sixth Ferrybank athlete to qualify for the European junior championships when she finished fifth in the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.14 at a meet in Oordegem Belgium last night.

Another Ferrybank athlete, Niall Tuohy won his 800m in a new PB of 1:51.58 and must be considered unlucky not to have been in a more competitive race in his attempt at the junior standard.

And continuing the Ferrybank story David McCarthy set a new PB in the 1,500m as he prepares for Euro juniors.

The ‘other’ David McCarthy was also in great as he lowered his best in the 800m to 1:47.71.

Another junior, Craig Murphy, lowered his PB by almost nine seconds in the 3,000m.

Hockey: Ireland Draw Level with Lithuanian in Second Match ; Ireland V The Netherlands (U18 Girls); Ireland V The Netherlands (U18 Boys); Irish Girls Finish 4th As Boys Are Relegated in Eurohockey Youth Nations Championship

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Ireland Draw Level with Lithuanian in Second Match

Ireland’s U18 Girls drew two all with Lithuanian in the second match of their Youth Nations Championship campaign, after beating the Belgians 5-3 yesterday.

Ireland went one nil down in the 22nd minute of play when a scramble around the mouth of the Irish goal saw the ball fall to a Lithuanian stick to dribble the ball over the Irish line.

Two minutes before half time a well practised short corner saw Ireland ’s Chloe Watkins convert her drag flick for a sweet equaliser.

In the 38th minute Lithuanian again nosed ahead with a drag flick penalty corner of their own. Ireland finally equalised in the 59th minute when some good open play saw Megan Frazer put in her country’s second goal.

Both sides had a chance to snatch the victory in the final minutes of the match but the score line remained two all. Ireland now go into their final game against the Dutch, a win or draw against them will secure their place in the final four play offs, a loss will mean the fate of their Championship is in the hands of the Belgian / Lithuanian result.

Commenting after the game was Manager Denise Doherty “We were relieved to get a draw as we could have lost the match when the Lithuanians won a penalty corner in the last second of the match”

“The girls coped well with the circumstances and style of play of the opposition.” She continued.

#####
Ireland lose two nil to the Dutch in third match.

Luck was not with Ireland ’s U18 girls today when they took on the mighty Dutch in their third and final pool match of the EuroHockey Youth Nations Championship.

Ireland thought they had opened the scoring when they converted a well taken penalty corner only to have the umpire disqualify the goal, for reasons still unclear. The two sides broke at half time scoreless.
Two minutes into the second half Ireland had a superb passage of play with the three forwards displaying some great flair, Anna O’Flanagan missed the goal by millimetres to put Ireland one ahead.

In the 48th minutes the Dutch finally opened their account when a penalty corner resulted in their first goal. They doubled their lead in the 60th minute with some good open attacking play.

Commenting after the match was manager Denise Doherty “We are extremely proud of the girls, their work rate out there was excellent. However, we are very disappointed to walk away without any points”.

Ireland’s fate now depends on the result between Lithuania and Belgium . Lithuania must beat Belgium by three clear goals to relegate Ireland to third position in the pools.

Ireland’s U18 Boys put on great performance against the Dutch.

Despite taking the lead at half time Ireland ’s U18 boys lost out in their final pool match to The Netherlands five goals to three.

Ireland were on the back foot eight minutes into their match when they lost possession in midfield which led to a direct shot from the Dutch which put them one nil ahead.

Ireland equalised through captain Neil Hamilton when he was awarded a penalty stroke. Hamilton had found his form and minutes later put Ireland in the lead with an excellent drag flick which found the bottom left corner of the Dutch goal. Hamilton was unlucky not to get a hatrick when his second drag flick of the day rebounded of the Dutch post. The Dutch didn’t take long to respond through a penalty corner of their own when quick reactions on a rebound saw the two countries draw level at two all. Ireland’s third goal was set up by McCrea who won the ball in midfield and set up a great pass to Jonathan Kane who found himself one on one with the keeper, cool headedness and superb skill saw Kane chip the keeper to leave him stranded and find the back of the Dutch net to give Ireland a 3-2 lead just before half time.

The Netherlands came out fighting after the break and immediately Irish Keeper Ross Murray was forced to pull of an excellent save, but the rebound fell kindly to a Dutch stick and a superb reverse stick shot left Murray with no chance as the teams drew level at three all.

Two more goals saw the Dutch seal their victory five three, with their fourth goal from a penalty corner and their fifth from a second phase shot after an initial save from Murray .

Commenting after the game was Manager, Stephen Cuddy “We were up against it today and we proved for large parts of the game that we could compete with one of the top nations in the world. This was our best performance of the tournament so far. We look forward to picking it up again on Friday.”

Ireland will be looking to finish in fifth place from this tournament this coming Friday in the play offs.

Irish Girls Finish 4th As Boys Are Relegated in Eurohockey Youth Nations Championship

There were mixed fortunes for Ireland’s U18 squads in the Eurohockey Youth Nations Championship in Edinburgh at the weekend, with the girls losing 2-0 to winners England and the boys losing their final match 3-2 to hosts Scotland.

Ireland’s girls’ final match was dead rubber, as England’s victory over Holland on Friday had removed any prospect of a medal for the Irish. However, the team finished off a successful campaign with another top four finish, despite Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to the eventual tournament winners, England.

Ireland’s boys rounded off a disappointing tournament with a 3-2 loss to hosts Scotland. Goals from Captain Neil Hamilton and Chris Gregg were not enough to prevent the team’s fifth defeat of the tournament and relegation to Trophy status for 2009.

Attention now turns to the senior squads with Ireland’s national teams launching their first attempt on Olympic qualification at the Eurohockey Nations Championship in Manchester in August.

Hockey: Ireland suffer disappointing defeat to the French (U18 Boys Ireland V France)

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Despite creating chances and earning themselves eight penalty corner’s the U18 boys came away with a two one loss against the French in their second game of the Eurohockey Youth Nations Championship.

France opened their account in the forty fifth minute with an open play goal to go one nil ahead. Ryan McCrea didn’t take long to find an answer and with quick reactions on a rebound he flicked the ball into the right hand corner of the French goal to equalise.

The game looked likely to close out with a one all draw when at the end of the seventy minutes France earned themselves their second penalty corner of the match which was saved by a good Irish defence but a foul in the circle gave the French another chance through another penalty corner which they converted through second phase play from a shot at the top right hand side of the circle.

Commenting after the game was Manager Stephen Cuddy “We are very disappointed as for 55 minutes we bossed the game and create chances. Chris Gregg & Ryan McCrea had excellent chances saved. We are also disappointed that we didn’t make more of our corners and we need to pick ourselves for tomorrow’s match although at this stage we can still not make top four.”

“But we are pleased with the guy’s work rate out there however we need to be more clinical in the circle.” He continued

Tyrone won their first Anglo-Celt Cup since 2003 with a hard-fought 1-15 to 1-13 victory over Monaghan in Clones, however, this was a different type of day in Ulster on Sunday or more specifically Monaghan, writes RTÉ’S Marty Morrissey. …

Hurling Qualifiers:

Tipperary 2-16 Cork 1-18

Laois 1-11 Clare 2-14

Offaly 2-25 Dublin 2-13

Galway 2-31 Antrim 1-09

Clare top their group, to face neighbours, Munster runners-up Limerick in the Quarter Final.
Galway’s comprehensive win in Antrim will see them renew their clash with Kilkenny.

Tipperary’s win in Thurles, gave Cork their second loss in the Championship this year, and neither defeat to Kilkenny -
Tipp top their group to meet Wexford in the next round.
Cork - second in their qualifer group meet the Munster winners, Waterford - which already saw an epic Munster Semi Final clash between the 2 this year.

The Semi Final Draw was made,

All-Munster clash - winners of Cork/Waterford V winners of Clare/Limerick

Back to Gaelic Football:
The Qualifier matches this weekend

Kildare 1-10 Louth 1-16

Derry 2-13 Mayo 1-06

Meath 0-11 Fermanagh 0-09

Westmeath 1-08 Donegal 1-13

All-Ireland League and Championship runners-up Mayo who had crashed to a dismal performance last September, repeated another poor spirited showing against Derry this weekend, managing just 7 scores in the entire match, 3 points in the second half.
In fact 2 points after the half-time break brought Mayo level with Derry - but with Mayo accruing 14 wides - they were to get just one more score to Derry’s 2 goals and 5 points.

Leinster battle between Louth and Kildare saw Louth pulling 6 points clear at the finish thanks to a late goal - but sealed a suprise but deserved win over the Lily-whites.

Meath managed a narrow win over Fermanagh, while Donegal defeated Westmeath by 5 points.

Now each of the winning qualifiers moves forward to play the Provincial Runners up teams - for a place in the Quarter Finals.

But Who will be there in the final eight, and who do these 4 winners have to defeat to get to these Quarters?

An All Ulster Clash sees Donegal meeing Ulster Runner-up Monaghan.
What should be the match of these qualifiers - Galway who lost to Sligo in Connacht play Meath.
Losing to Dublin, Laois will look to get their tracks back to winning ways, but Derry who thrashed Mayo, are the opposition for this round.
An All Red clash between the country’s smallest county Louth and biggest county - Cork will see Cork facing a difficult time should Louth reproduce the form they showed this weekend.
Monaghan will play Donegal, Laois will face Derry, Galway have been drawn against Meath, and Cork will entertain Louth.

Golf : Irish Women V Norway

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Report from Friday’s Independent.ie

IRELAND yesterday brushed aside the disappointment of failing to qualify for the top flight in the European Ladies Team Championship in Milan and positively set about the task of finishing in the best possible position in the Euro rankings - ninth.

Ireland got off to the best start against an under-rated Norwegian team, winning the foursomes match courtesy of Deirdre Smith and Maura Morrin who were never troubled by Amalie Valle and Lene Morch and romped to a 6&4 success in double-quick time.

Playing at the top of the singles order Irish champion Karen Delaney continued her woeful run by crashing 4&3 to an inspired Lene Krog.

But her sister Tara got the show back on the road by defeating Marita Engzelius by 2&1 and was one under par in the process.

Northern Ireland’s Danielle McVeigh was an easy 4&3 winner over Tonje Daffinrud to secure victory for Ireland. Marian Riordan lost the last match but that was only of academic interest as the Irish team won 3-2. They now meet Scotland who had to pull out all the stops yesterday to dispose of Slovenia.

End of the Toto for Cork City in Sweden

Monday, July 16th, 2007

CORK CITY crashed out of the InterToto Cup in Stockholm yesterday.

A second half goal by Petter Andersson gave Hammarby the spoils on the day and that was good enough to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory for the Swedish outfit.

Cork twice eliminated Swedish sides from European competitions in the past four years, but they rarely looked like claiming a third scalp.
