There were good Irish performances in all races in the recent European Mountain Running Championships held in Cauterets, France. The races were run in cool conditions with the longer races running in a low cloud for around 5 km before emerging into the sunshine for the last 2 to 3 km before finishing at the 2,400m summit. This was in stark contrast to the strong sunshine on the Saturday.
The championships incorporated junior races for the first time. Michelle Sturm finished 18th in a small field in the junior women’s race.
…
In the junior men’s race, … Leading Irish performer, and youngest competitor in the race, was Michael Dowling from West Wicklow who finished in 30th place.
In the women’s race Ireland finished 14th of 16 teams and were led home by Fiona Maxwell of Mourne Runners. This represented an improvement on our placing of 16th (2006) and 17th (2005).

World Youths, European Under 23 Report
As the European U23 championships draw to an end there was disappointment yesterday as Andrew Ledwith, no doubt feeling the effects of his American season, finished 19th in the 10,000m.
Sharon Heveran was 10th in the high jump with a season’s best of 1.82m
Rose Ann Galligan, another athlete after a long American season, joins Linda Byrne in the final of the 1,500m later today.
At the World Youths championships everything that could go wrong did go wrong as he failed to register a mark in his discus qualifying group
And there was more bad news as Alistair Cragg dropped ot of the 5,000m in Rome on Friday night. David Gillick was eight in the 400m in 45.81, someway off his Irish record.

Ferrybank club success at Oordegem Belgium
Mairead Murphy became the sixth Ferrybank athlete to qualify for the European junior championships when she finished fifth in the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.14 at a meet in Oordegem Belgium last night.
Another Ferrybank athlete, Niall Tuohy won his 800m in a new PB of 1:51.58 and must be considered unlucky not to have been in a more competitive race in his attempt at the junior standard.
And continuing the Ferrybank story David McCarthy set a new PB in the 1,500m as he prepares for Euro juniors.
The ‘other’ David McCarthy was also in great as he lowered his best in the 800m to 1:47.71.
Another junior, Craig Murphy, lowered his PB by almost nine seconds in the 3,000m.
