Setanta Sports Trophy International Tournament tickets selling fast

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Tickets have gone on sale for the new Setanta Sports Trophy this week and already and selling fast. A generous 25% discount is being offered by the IHA to those who book and pay for tickets beforehand and the policy is proving very attractive.

“It’s a policy we first employed at the 2005 Women’s European Nations Championships and it proved very successful then,” says IHA Chief Executive Paul Varian .

“Our key message to people would be “book early”, because in 2005, the event sold out and people who arrived on the day expecting to gain entry at the gate were unfortunately turned away,” continued Varian. “We urge people to go online and book their tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.”

Tickets can be purchased online at www.hockey.ie/setanta and prices vary with attractive discounts for U18s, students, families and season ticket purchasers. U13 children are in for free and Thursday’s fixtures, that do not feature Ireland ’s teams, are free for all!

“We’ve attempted to make the event very attractive to people who book early, bring a youth contingent and want to attend many games,” says Varian. “So I urge the Irish hockey public to get behind this important event and help make it a successful this year, and for years to come.”

The Tournament will run as a joint men’s and women’s tournament and features top world nations competing in a four nations format.

The Irish women will take on Olympic Champions Germany, South Africa and Scotland while the Irish men will face Canada, Egypt and Wales. This tournament is your chance to see some of the world’s top hockey athletes compete for The Setanta Sports Trophy.

hockey: The Dutch Make It Two in A Row Against Ireland – Women`s hockey

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Ireland V The Netherlands, Bellevue Manchester (14.00 Tuesday, May 22nd)

The Irish women took on The Netherlands once again this afternoon as part of a two match friendly international series. Ireland have used these two matches are part of their build up towards the EuroHockey Nations Championship taking place this coming August.

In an Irish performance that was more impressive than the previous night’s game against the Dutch, head coach, Muller seemed pleased with their progress “We were much better today and we competed in defence and created more in attack than yesterday. It was a case of getting used to the pace of the Dutch, we did concede goals off three of their five corners which is an aspect that demands attention in our next matches.”

The Irish started much better than the previous night and it showed when it took the Dutch twenty minutes of play before they got their first on target shot which keeper Louisa Healy cleared from the line.

When the Dutch managed to penetrate the Irish goal they did it in style with two drag flicks from Kim Lammers who dragged the ball passed the Irish defence with speed from two consecutive penalty corners in the 25th and 27th minute to go two nil up before half time.
Ireland looked like they may find an answer before half time through some good attacking play from McDonagh and Cregan but the Dutch defence kept them at bay.

First half closed 2:0

The second half started with the Dutch putting the Irish defence under pressure but cool headedness at the back kept Ireland competing. Ireland’s forwards got to see more of the ball today and the attacking play eventually paid off in the twentieth minute when a Parkhill free hit found McKean to roof the ball into the Dutch net with a superb deflection.

With only four minutes left on the clock the Dutch sealed their second victory in a row with a third goal when Fatima Moreiar De Melo converted a penalty corner.

The Irish camp will travel home later this evening and will face The Netherland Antilles in a three day series in UCD next weekend as part of their continuing build up over the Summer.

Hockey:The Irish Women loose first friendly against The Mighty Dutch

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Gene Muller and his team took on the world number ones late yesterday evening in the first of two friendly Internationals. These matches are taking place in Bellevue, Manchester giving both teams the chance to test out the surface for the forthcoming Eurohockey Nations Championship.

Despite loosing three nil, Ireland had chances of their own and no doubt seeing Ireland pitched against the world number ones will have given Coach Muller areas to focus on, “We did not adapt well to the tempo of the match. I felt we were chasing the game and not controlling aspects of it. That will be our focus for today to control our tempo in possession.” stated Muller.

The Dutch played like the world champions they are and they showed their intentions when they hit post in first five minutes resulting in two Irish defenders coming to rescue to clear the Irish line. Keeper Mary Goode was kept busy and forced to make a number of excellent saves, keeping the Irish score sheet clean. The Dutch had at least five penalty corners in the first half but excellent defensive work and good sweeping off the pads from Emma Clarke kept Ireland in the game.

Ireland were not without their own chances and penetrated the Dutch circle to put the Dutch under some defensive pressure of their own. An excellent chance from Rachel Mulligan saw her shot go high over the bar.

The first half looked likely to close out scoreless until excellent Dutch attacking play from left to right yielded a superb reverse stick shot to find the back of the Irish net in the 30th minute. (Half time 1:0)

It didn’t take the Dutch long to double their lead and ten minutes into the second half they converted the first penalty corner of the second half, despite a great initial save by Goode, the rebound saw the second goal.

The Dutch continued with strong attacking play and Ireland defended patiently and showed a good work rate. Despite the Dutch earning five corners in a fifteen minute period of play Ireland kept their goal clean. Ireland’s own attacking play saw McDonagh, McKean and McKay force the Dutch keeper into making saves, before an excellent goal scored in the 69th minute copper fastened the Dutch victory with a three nil win.

Ireland will play The Netherlands again later this afternoon at 2pm, they will be without captain Linda Caulfield who has been ruled out due to an ankle injury she received in last night’s game.

Irish Squad V The Netherlands

golf: Irish Open the door to an Irish win - Padraig Harrington

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Leading by 4 shots well inside the final round, Padraig Harrington had to endure a nailbiting finale as playing partner Bradley Dredge from Wales clawed back to take Padraig to a play-off.

After 3 birdies and an eagle,  Lying at -7 as he teed up on the 10th green, he saw a back nine ahead, and a gap of 4 strokes to his nearest rival at -3. As Pardraig Harrington droped 2 shots on the back nine, Welshman Bradley Dredge holed some terrific long-rang putts to register 4 birdies (and 2 bogeys) in the back nine, bringing him to -5 on the 17th hole, the same hole on which Padraig Harrington lost 1 shot (the 2nd of 2 bogeys on his back nine), to tie the match at -5 for the final hole, the 18th.

Should you go for it, or make sure you don’t make a mistake? Both played safe and parred the hole taking the event to a sudden-death playoff.

In the first sudden death play-off hole, Dredge’s 2nd shot sat awkwardly on a water bank. His third shot cleared the water hazard ahead, but lodged into the soft river bank on the other side of the River Maigue. After 5 shots, dredge was out of difficulty, but when Harrington putt his 5th shot, the event was decided and the first Irish winner of the Irish Open for 26 years, Padraig Harrington was the winner, and presented with the Irish Open Crystal trophy and prize €416,660.

Check out the EuropeanTour website for all other Irish players’ results, including Damien McGrane and Gary Murphy both in joint 12th place, at +5, and Graeme McDowell joint 31st just 2 shots back at +7.

Helen Flaherty formerly of Shantalla, in Arnhem Netherlands

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

The following is by Frances Black’s webmaster and web-forum owner Mark van Setten
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fblack/

For those who live near to Arnhem in the Netherlands (like me), I want to let you know that Helen Flaherty will be performing in Musis Sacrum in Arnhem next week Friday 25 May. Helen is a good friend of Frances Black and was part of the first Irish Unplugged tour in which Frances also participated. Frances even wrote a recommendation letter for the booklet in Helen’s first solo album. Some of you may also know Helen as being the former lead singer of Shantalla.

I have seen Helen several times at festivals and concerts and I think she is very good. So, if you are near Arnhem and are able to come next week Friday, I suggest you come for a great evening of music. I already booked my ticket. For more details on the concert, please visit http://www.musis-sacrum.nl

IRELAND FUND of Monaco announces New Initiatives

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

IRELAND FUND OF MONACO ANNOUNCES NEW INITIATIVES

Monte Carlo, 15 May 2007 - The Ireland Fund of Monaco, a registered charity in the Principality of Monaco since 1996, has announced the creation of a new philanthropic initiative in which it will work with, and provide the leadership for, Ireland Funds around the world in two specific areas:  1) providing grants for medical research into chronic diseases that are significantly present in the Irish population but which impact people everywhere; and 2) providing grants for emergency relief to areas struck by catastrophic disaster, where the availability of immediate funds provide the basics for survival, such as clean water, and emergency housing and medical aid, so that people survive to benefit from the later and longer-term intervention of the larger and more-established groups like the International Red Cross or Catholic Relief Services.

Called the Monaco/Ireland Fund Alliance, or M/IFA, the project is launched under the high patronage of His Serene Highness, Prince Albert II of Monaco.  It will make its initial grant in medical research in June, 2007, at the annual conference of the worldwide Ireland Funds which will be held in Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland.

“We are delighted and honored that, with this initiative, we shall be leading the Ireland Funds into a new era,” said Ireland Fund of Monaco President, Michael Fitzgerald.  “In the current economic climate, charitable and philanthropic organizations everywhere are facing challenges that force us to constantly re-evaluate our objectives and our justification.  With M/IFA, we will provide much needed resources for two areas of constantly unmet or under-funded needs.”
The Ireland Funds, founded thirty-five years ago, is among the largest networks of people of Irish ancestry and friends of Ireland dedicated to raising support for programs of peace and reconciliation, education and community development.
