Tremendous Irish Tennis Ladies Win Promotion in Fed Cup with victory over Latvia

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Following 3 superb wins by the Irish Ladies in their first 3 Fed Cup matches this week against Moldova, Montenegro and Malta, today Ireland played its final match, against joint Group B toppers Latvia.

Latvia had defeated Montenegro and Moldova already  and still have Malta to play on Friday. But Ireland with wins over the other 3 opponents so far, this was the decider, win this and the team secures promotion to Group II in the Fed Cup. Lose and it depends on Latvia’s match against Malta tomorrow, a team Ireland defeated 3-0.

In the 3 matches before today, Ireland’s Emma Murphy won Ireland’s opening singles match, and Ireland went on to win from there, it being a crucial decider against Montenegro on Monday.

Against Latvia when Emma took the first set 6-2, it looked well. Alise Vaidere, her opponent struck back with wins in in the 2nd and 3rd sets 1-6. Not the start Ireland had hoped for.
Just one deciding break in each set gave Kelly Laggin a superb win in her singles match, 6-4 6-3.

All tied at 2-a-piece.
Yvonne Doyle partnered Kelly, and powered to a 6-2, 6-4 win in the Doubles match.
Ireland win the set, the match, and topping the group have guaranteed Grade II tennis next year,  winning promotion from Grade III by topping this group.

Well done to the entire team players, team captain and coaches and manager.

R1 - A.VAIDERE (LAT) def. E.MURPHY (IRL) 2-6  6-1  6-1
R2 - K.LIGGAN (IRL) def. I.KUZMINA (LAT) 6-4  6-3
R3 - Y.DOYLE / K.LIGGAN (IRL) def. I.KUZMINA / A.VAIDERE (LAT) 6-2  6-4

The inside view - Motorola Cork - it`s The Final Countdown

The inside view - Motorola Cork – it`s The Final Countdown

On March the 9th, 95% of employees at Motorola Cork received their final dates of employment in Cork.

About half of the 330-350 left the organisation on 31st March 2007.

Of the half that is left, about 2/3 of those are leaving at the end of April and the majority of the remaining engineers and managers are leaving at the end of May.

I received my own ’severance’ date of 30th April, and today 26th April I am packing my boxes of belongings, pencils, books, notes, training material - collected or hoarded over a 10 year period… difficult to know which ones I may need again in the future…

Almost 10 years devoted to Telecoms software engineering, developing a huge variety of projects.

Time has come to move forward and look to a huge bright challenging future.

The past 10 years, I have met many good bright people here at Motorola in Cork - the best developers and engineers I have ever come across have been in my most recent group - the Sys-Admin team. It has also proved that a work-hard, play-hard motto does work well. Working with groups on the EMX, NetPlan, iDEN and UMTS/CDMA OMC products, it has been a barrel full of experiences.

When I joined back 10 years ago, we had a site with 220 people. It was intimate enough and young enough - that Thursday nights became Motorola night in Cork city, with a few Pubs and nightclubs befitting hugely from our atmosphere. In fact I recall some nightclubs which would have seemed quite busy on a Thursday night, would have had 5 people if Motorola employees had not been there.

So it was like a big happy family then. Sports and Social events were well attended, and frequent.

There were 2 divisions of work- EMX, the Analog switch - and the OMC-, Operations and Maintenance of a GSM network.

I recall many individuals maintained their own websites, with a split of content between fun and work. Light Bantering associated gifs and jpgs of celebrities with people in Cork. It was fun, light, and at times became known as a ‘gif’ war, where several guys kept coming up with new images which each associated with the others. It was fun. Image editing tools were the order of the day.

The Motorola canteen - In 1997, at 11am you gave your individual order for lunch. Lunchtime was 12:30-1:15, where you bought what you ordered.

In 1999 to 2000, there was a new canteen built and opened - no more having to order in advance – you decided in the canteen - there was a choice of 3 main courses (including 1 vegetarian dish), soup, sandwiches and filled rolls, and a salad bar – the canteen had expanded with the size of the organisation in Cork - at its peak Motorola Cork had in close to 700 people on site. At one time there was over-capacity at Cork Motorola, and many employees were temporarily located in a neighbouring ‘Jacobs Engineering’ facility.

The Cork site also had a prefab attached to the main building - accomodating overflow, which was hot when the sun came out, and from all the PCs in the unit - and cold in winter.

With Cork’s expansion and doubling the size of the facility, everyone was eventually accommodated in the main building. But that was more than 7 years ago, and Motorola Cork and the global IT, Telecoms and Cork services industry were booming.

With dot-com ‘crash’ in the early 2000s and a slow-down in the ‘silicon valley’ in Ireland, reports were heard of individuals who left Motorola Cork – to go to abroad for a year, to return a year later to find a collapsed Irish IT industry – finding it extremely difficult at the time to find relevant work.

Motorola layed-off 10,000’s of employees worldwide. Cork escaped the hatchet of any culling back then.

What was introduced in Cork was a recruitment freeze, so by natural attrition the numbers dropped by 56 in 2001, 34 in 2002, just 13 in 2003 (height of the industry-downturn), 35 in 2004, 20 in 2005. That’s a workforce reduction of 158 employees.

In the meantime also Motorola PCS division became a separate entity – Freescale, and took their section of the business – approx 100-150 employees at the time out to their new facility by Cork airport.

During 2006, Voluntary Redundancy was first announced of up to 150 personnel in April. Through negotiation and intake by other parts of the Cork org, there were only 29 redundancies at the time – who left in June of last year. It is believed that more than 100 actually applied for Voluntary redundancy at the time.

A second round of Voluntary and Involuntary Redundancies followed in November/ December, with 59 leaving. An additional 34 people left, by handing in their own notice, during 2006. With 122 leaving in 2006, this took the workforce down to approx 330-350.

Follow previous threads on this, and what happened early this year, on how Brenda Herold announced to the Cork workforce that all engineering functionality was being removed from the centre and that the Cork site was to close: Motorola - the inside view to 330 Redundancies from Cork

Over the past 10 years, for work I have travelled to Chicago (USA), Dallas (USA), Swindon (UK), China and Brazil. With work friends developed here, my travels have taken me to Paris - and a Euro-2000 European Championships Tour of Brussels, Bruges, Rotterdam and Amsterdam and to a few locations across Ireland.

My final day onsite in Motorola Cork is tomorrow, 27th April.

As the door closes behind, and cherished memories, laughs and good times are remembered, the pain and stress and tough times are all forgotten - at least for the moment.

Regards to all,

The inside-view.

European GAA by the Danube: Budapest Tournament April 21 2007 with Munich, Vienna and Budapest - men`s and ladies Gaelic Football

Budapest Tournament April 21 2007

Budapest got the Central and Eastern European region rolling, in magnificent sunshine, with a very enjoyable tournament hosted on the Danube bend in a little village called ‘leanyfalu’

Three men’s teams Budapest, Vienna and Munich took part  and two ladies teams Budapest and Vienna.

Munich V Vienna (Men’s)
The throw in was just after midday when Vienna took the Field against neighbors and rivals Munich. Vienna started well and it seemed almost appropriate that Peter Murphy one of the founders of the Budapest team
(today on loan to Vienna)Kicked the tournaments first point.
Munich however proved to be the stronger team and ran out winners 2-11 to 0-4

Munich V Budapest (Men’s)
The match we were all waiting for after two magnificent encounters last year was up next. All the pundits were predicting a close encounter. It was not the case and some well worked goals clearly showed Budapest superiority Budapest winning 5-7 to Munich’s 0-6

Budapest V Vienna (Men’s)
Unsurprisingly Vienna led on by John Baxter gave Budapest a real scare here and at half time the hosts were only 2 points ahead. The second half saw Budapest pull away again with some cleverly worked goals. Final score Budapest 6-4 Vienna 2-1
Men’s Final Budapest V Munich
The final proved to be a much closer affair with Mick O Connell leading from the front for Munich and taking the game to Budapest. At half time it was anyone’s game. The second half saw Budapest up the tempo and they finished clear and deserving winners 4-8 to Munich’s 2-5 .Budapest then retain their cup and this Budapest team could go far in Europe if they can get to the tournaments at the second stage the next round should be a classic as Munich (who were missing some players) will be looking to avenge these two defeats

Ladies Final Budapest V Vienna
The ladies game was a highly entertaining affair with both teams trading points and goals almost one for one and some fancy football from both sides at half time Budapest let by one point. The second half was almost a replica of the first
But Vienna’s 2 second half goals putting their noses ahead at the final post. This was the closest game of the day and very well supported by the fans Final score Budapest 2-4 Vienna 3-3. Vienna taking the cup back over the border.

Player of the Tournament
There were many fantastic players on show today Three quarters of the Budapest team would have been deserving winners also Mick O Connell from Munich who had a great final. The award went to John Baxter from Vienna who never gave up and played each game as if it was his last.

The evening finished off with a very entertaining dinner in Becketts and all were honoured by the presence of the Irish Ambassador  Martin Greene who made a speech and presented the prizes.
Last stop was a cultural tour till 6 am finishing at the Balkans Kert

Many thanks to Gearoid O Sullivan ,Kieran Fahy , Peter Murphy , Eamonn O Floinn and Liam Carroll and Brian Elders for a very well run tournament in Budapest

Meet social & serious Bloggers, Java Coders, Web, Financial & Software Business Developers - where anyone can speak about anything - usually speaking about and discussing what they do or know, what they`ve learnt - all for free - that was Barcamp Ireland3 - Dublin

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Barcamp Dublin Not being from Dublin, at 9 o’clock on Saturday, I drove by Heustan Train station. I had checked directions and had in my mind how to get from Heuston Station to The Digital Exchange in Crane St Dublin.
There was one main street across from the Station, I go up that hill, turn left at the top, and I should find Crane St there on the right hand side.
As I approached the train station I see that the ‘hill’ is now a tram-line only for the Luas. The Day got better - within minutes Between the jigs and reels and a few Liffey bridges later I found the venue, and parking was handy at the Digital Hub itself- free for the day - a rarity I did not expect.

Barcamp Ireland3, or Barcamp Dublin, was organised and run by Dublin based Joe Drumgoole, Elly Parker, Paul Walsh, Eoghan McCabe and Paul Browne.. There may have been others also helping with everything.
Hard work, months of preparation - and like a wedding - there are large parts of the effort that can only be put in place on the day itself or the evening before.

I hope you all enjoyed the afters… and let your feet up and hair down…

From 9:15 to 10am people found their feet, a cup of coffee, and a quick browse to see where the rooms were - one boardroom like conference room - for smaller group discussions, one room with capacity for a few dozen if required, and then a large auditorium for any large forum or topic crossing business, technology and and web or social networking (blog / video/flickr) stuff really. There were a few.

A Chart-board displayed a timetable per room - split in 1 hr segments. if you wished to talk, you simply put up your post-it booking a timeslot and room.
What this meant is that from 10am to 1pm there was capacity for 9 different Talks. One could attend 3 of these, as at any one time there would also be 2 others taking place.

Praise must go to self-sacrificing Elly ‘Babes’ Parker, who greeted everyone at the door, and was still greeting people as they arrived close to lunch time.
Although I missed Elly’s talk in Waterford in January’s Barcamp http://www.barcampsoutheast.com on Dealing with Death & Divorce in today’s Digital World, I did watch her speak in Cork in September - “Getting Granny Podcasting (or Encouraging Web Usage in Non-Technical People)” http://barcamp.org/BarCampIrelandPresentations Shes’s a great interesting witty speaker - missed in Dublin due to her commitment to self-lessly ensure the day ran smoothly for everyone else.
Paul Browne manned the door & was at the greeting desk for alot of the day as well.

The speakers and topics I attended were:
How to Price SAAS (Software as a Service)- by Conor Halpin ( LeCayla LeCayla Technologies ) - I’ll elaborate on this in a seperate note later. If interested in why Conor got into a straight-jacket during his presentation - and how he got out- then follow-up by reading more on his talk later.

As this finished I managed to catch the last 15 minutes of Eoin O’Dell’s (www.cearta.ie) talk and discussion on the “Law of Blogs; Blogs of Law”. I think when I saw the title initially I believed it would be a guide of what you should and should not do in blogging.
Not exactly…
This was a presentation on the actual Law - Irish & European Law - and how it applies to the web and blogging - basically what you are and are not allowed to do and say on a blog - Read the article later on Eoin’s explanation of how liable you are if you link to another site, Privacy law, copyright, if someone leaves a contemptuous or ‘hate’ comment, or entry, in your blog… etc.
I seemed to catch the main gist of the talk - slides here, and it was fascinating - more later .
Eoin’s familiarity … - I’m trying to figure out how/ where I know him from … UCC maybe… many moons ago - or maybe somewhere else.

Darren Barefoot’s “Social media marketing, or how I learned to love the mob”. In his Canadian accent, his presentation - included some excellent tips and background on the social networking - blogging, video-sharing, photo-sharing… more later… presentation online.

Back in Cork’s Barcamp in September, Eoghan McCabe drew quite an open discussion on ‘the ethics of Search Engine Optimisation’. A very bright guy, even more evidenced by his presentation on Saturday.
In Dublin his presentation on ‘Web Usability 101: A 30-Minute Crash Course’ was like a class on making any website more user friendly, and what a user does and does not want to have to do… if you want to know what any web-user wants - read about Eoghan’s presentation.

A break for lunch at 1 gave a chance to meet with quite a few people including Will Knott , David Behan davidbehan.com/blog , Clare Dillon & Sean Foley of Microsoft, Kevin (can’t remember his surname - was it Peyton?), Peter Staunton , Stephen Downey Passion Development , and John Ward, of Cengal - who had a presentation at 2 about how starting a year ago, gave hints on how to get Enterprise Ireland funding, he learnt many lessons on pitching to the financial sector, especially with any technical product, or software or service - he gave 8 handiy tips for any start-ups pitching anything technical to a financial company. Check later and I’ll include exactly what these tips are.

For my last hour, 3 to 4pm , there was a panel discussion, chaired by one of the Barcamp Dublin’s planners Joe Drumgoole of putplace.com, with Tom Raftery , Karlin Lillington http://www.techno-culture.com/ , Sean O Sullivan of mysay.com / rococo & Darren Barefoot -addressed questions & issues such as :
How to make money from Social Networking / websites
How to Get more Users / Visitors - or whether visitor rate is important at all …
and some tips about these and other topics will be added later.

At 4 o’clock, I bid farewell to Barcamp Dublin, with a wad full of tips and advice, that I know will be beneficial - now it’s time to identify which actions to take and when…

The next barcamp Ireland is in Galway in the Autumn with an educational one in Thurles in June.

And in the meantime, all across Europe, in the next 2 months barcamps are in Frankfurt Germany, Paris France, Bazzano Italy, Turin Italy, Brussels Belgium.
