Camogie in Brussels Invitation to play and support on 21 October

On behalf of the Brussels Hurling and Camogie Club, I am writing to invite you to participate in the first ever camogie match to be played in Brussels between the Brussels camogie team and a visiting team from Dublin (Ballyboden St. Endas) which will take place on Saturday 21st October 2006 at 2pm at the Elephant pitches in Tervuren, the same place where we held our European Tournament in June.

On the Saturday evening, we plan to have a food and drinks with our visitors probably in the Michael Collins pub (again same place as where we had the bbq in June) and then for those who want to, show the girls the hot spots of Brussels .

If you can manage to make it to Brussels that weekend, we would be more than happy to see you and welcome you into our team (maybe you can convince some of your lads to come too and support!) - it should be a good weekend and all of our girls are looking forward to the prospect of a real camogie match (for a lot of them it will the first one).

Ireland enjoy Azerbaijan victory

Ireland enjoy Azerbaijan victory
A goal in each half gave the Republic of Ireland a vital 2-0 win in their U-17 UEFA first phase qualifier against hosts Azerbaijan in Baku, on Monday.

Conor McCormack and Garreth Matthews provided the goals to assure victory and give Ireland a tremendous chance of reaching next year’s Elite stage of the competition.

The Irish drew 0-0 with Denmark in a tight group opener on Saturday.

Ireland go into Thursday’s (tonight’s) last group game against Latvia knowing that a draw will guarantee them one of the two qualifying slots on offer. A win would secure top spot in the group.

€10 million drugs bust - flight from southern Belgium to Weston Airport Dublin Ireland.

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

MILLIONAIRE businessman Jim Mansfield was caught up in a €10 million international drugs bust yesterday when it emerged his private jet was being used to fly 50 kilogrammes of heroin into Ireland.

It is understood that two men flew out in the small jet from Weston Aerodrome in Dublin early on Tuesday morning to Kortrijk-Wevelgem airport in southern Belgium, where they were to collect another man.

Once he boarded the plane, the three were arrested by Belgian police. Luggage containing 50kg of heroin was also seized. The Irish-registered jet was impounded.

The three — two Irishmen aged 32 and 38, and one Briton aged 53 — appeared before a Belgian magistrate yesterday. They will appear again tomorrow.

Irish Head Emphatic Europe win of the 36th Ryder Cup

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Paul McGinley had putted the winning shot in the previous Ryder Cup. Irish Man Padraig Harrington, Tee’d up in the very first green for the very first shot of this Ryder Cup. Darren Clarke proved what a superb wildcard choice he was in a week of a million emotions for him.

Europe claimed their third consecutive Ryder Cup with an outstanding display of golf in an 18.5 to 9.5 victory at an emotionally charged K Club in Kildare this afternoon.

Leading the USA 10-6 overnight on Saturday, Ian Woosnam’s side easily collected the four-and-a-half points they needed to seal victory in front of an amazing 40,000 plus fans at the sun-drenched Straffan course.
Ireland’s Harrington, McGinley and Clarke celebrate winning the Ryder Cup.

‘This is as good as it gets,’ said Clarke, crying his eyes out as he savoured the victory. ‘The support I’ve had is something I will cherish forever. I’ve too many memories to list. It’s done a lot for me. A lot of people how showed how much they care for me and cared for Heather.

‘I was just trying to keep my emotions in check all the way round. The fans have been fantastic and the American players and their wives have been incredible too.’

He had a remarkable success, winning all his matches - and received a standing ovation from his fellow and USA players at the victory ceremony.

Finnan, O-Shea, McGeady in action in European Champions League

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

A Kenny Miller penalty gave Celtic their first Champions League points as they defeated Copenhagen 1-0 at Parkhead. Irish International Aiden McGeady, who impressed on the night, was causing plenty of problems for Copenhagen with his pace.

Ireland’s John O’Shea was in action in the middle of the park for Manchester United’s clash with Benfica in Lisbon. Louis Saha’s second-half strike gave Manchester United their first Champions League away win in three years, score 0-1.

Steve Finnan proved playmaker for Liverpool’s second goal inside 15 minutes. On 52 minutes, When Crouch blasted a spectacular third, from another Finnan pass,  the night should have been a stroll.

But Galatasaray started to attack with a vengeance and substitute Umit Karan twice headed goals to give the Turks real hope of a miracle recovery.

Somehow Liverpool clung onto three precious Group C points.

De Rossa warns against driving Turkey away from EU

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Dublin Labour MEP, Proinsias De Rossa, has today warned against driving Turkey away from the European Union and called on MEPs to amend the Report tabled to the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg .

Mr De Rossa said “the Report as it stands at the moment is “unbalanced”. He insisted that adoption of a series of amendments was crucial to Socialist Group support for the report.

“As it stands, the report will strengthen the hand of those who oppose reform in Turkey . It fails to reflect our commitment to positive but critical engagement with Turkey .

“The European Parliament should not frustrate the negotiation process. We must be alert to the danger of driving Turkey away from Europe on to another course.”

He added: ” Turkey ’s participation in UNIFIL is a clear example of Turkey ’s constructive role.”

Rejecting attempts to bring genocide accusations into membership talks and opposing the proposal of an EU-Turkey partnership to replace membership, Mr De Rossa said: “The EU should treat Turkey on the same basis as any other candidate country: by applying the Copenhagen criteria. We cannot add new preconditions along the way.

“The goal of the negotiations is membership, even though the outcome will depend on Turkey ’s commitment to the process. We reject alternative formulas.”

“Whilst the EU’s capacity to take Turkey on board is an issue that we will have to address in due course there is no reason for it to affect the negotiation process, which will not conclude for some time. As we have repeatedly pointed out, the Nice Treaty is an inadequate basis for further EU enlargements after Romania and Bulgaria . The EU will have to bring reforms into force within the framework of the constitutional process before it can enlarge further. There is no reason why that cannot be done before Turkey is ready to join”

PADDY SHERLOCK and the Swingin Lovers back in The Coolin, Paris

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

FREE IN!!!

PADDY SHERLOCK and the Swingin’ Lovers

Live!

Every Sunday.6.30pm at
The COOLIN.
15 Rue Clement
(in the marché st Germain)
Paris 6th Arrondisment
Metro Mabillon.
Paddy Sherlock starts back his sunday session at The Coolin bar in Paris.

“As the Guinness Flowed, the Crowd went Wild…”.

“These guys should be prescribed for all depressives! (but any timid folk should stay down in the back row…!)”
That’s the comment from a critic in French magazine “Jazzhot” about top international performer Paddy Sherlock and his band The Swingin’ Lovers.

Take a bunch of guys. Good lookin’ guys. Well dressed and impressive. Experienced, brilliant musicians who have travelled the world. They are American, Canadian, French and Irish. Have them get together in that very special melting pot that is Paris and you get: “The Swingin’ Lovers”!

Think Frank Sinatra, think Fred Astaire - but then think of swing’s shadow world. A world inhabited by the hobo counter- culture that was the 1930’s. The music as it was away from the glitzy world of Hollywood. Now bring it up to date - to the 21st century. This is a band dancing to the joys of life somewhere between the Stray Cats and Louis Jordan, Nat King Cole and Dr. John. With the Lovers, anything goes! - from Bunk to Monk through skunk, junk, punk and funk…

“The Swingin’ Lovers” is the brainchild of Irish singer, trombonist and songwriter Paddy Sherlock. Paddy grew up in Dublin. When he first picked up his uncle’s trombone aged nine, he liked it so much his uncle never saw it again…!    Starting classically in Dublin at the Academy of Music and the Irish Youth Orchestra, before moving to Paris 20 years ago, he has since consistently worked with top French and international acts on award winning albums and shows. (Though he has been back in Ireland this year, playing with Irish star Jack Lukeman at the Olympia and his band recently performed at the ever so chic Farmleigh House in Dublin).

The rest of the band are all top quality performers. From Bronx-born guitarist “Bad Boy” Billy Collins to north of England’s hard slapping double-bassist Stephen Harrison, Mike O’Dougherty from Denver Colorado and Canadian drummer: Marty Vickers - the band simply rocks!  And most importantly and rarely in swing and jazz music, they play a full set of their own original songs in French and in English.

Of his own infamous Parisian gigs at the Coolin bar in the heart of the latin quarter… the list of people who have come to jam with Paddy reads like a who’s-who of music: David Gilmour, John Lord, Ian Paice, Sam Andrews, Barbero (from Cuban band “sierra maistra”), the whole of the Woody Allen New Orleans jazz band and at least half of the James Brown band, not forgetting his own favourite, Al Grey, trombonist from the Count Basie Band… to name but a few.

RYANAIR ANNOUNCES 5 NEW ROUTES DUBLIN TO FUERTEVENTURA, TENERIFE, SARDINIA & SICILY & DERRY TO GLASGOW PRESTWICK
This brings to 18 the number of new routes that Ryanair will launch from Dublin by February 2007. In summer 2007, Ryanair will operate 19 aircraft and 69 routes from Dublin. These new routes strengthen Ryanair’s position as Ireland’s national airline. Ryanair now:

  3. Carries 50% more passengers to/from Ireland (12M) than any other airline
  4. Has an average fare (€41) that is half the price of any other airline

“Our new routes from Dublin in 2007 will allow even more passengers to travel to/from Europe and the UK for less than half the fares charged by Aer Lingus. Where they have a choice, more passengers prefer Ryanair because we give them the lowest fares, the youngest aircraft, the best punctuality, and a guarantee of no fuel surcharges.

“More than twice as many passengers travelling between Ireland and the UK choose Ryanair over Aer Lingus and this latest expansion of our low fare routes from Dublin will ensure that this success is replicated between Ireland and Europe.
